Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Liam ColeWithin forty-eight hours of the courtroom ambush, Liam Cole’s meticulously constructed life of corporate ambition and suburban hypocrisy completely disintegrated.

Federal investigators didn't wait for a formal referral; the moment Judge Higgins forwarded the court transcripts to the U.S. Attorney's office, a compliance team raided Liam’s corporate office downtown. They boxed up his computers, confiscated his files, and escorted him out of the building in front of all his colleagues—including the executive board members he had spent years trying to impress.

Chloe Vance was fired by noon the same day, her corporate email wiped, her access revoked, and her name flagged across the entire financial district for securities fraud and embezzlement.

And Liam?

Liam found himself locked out of his corporate accounts, abandoned by his high-priced defense attorney who refused to represent a client facing federal fraud charges without an upfront retainer he could no longer afford, and forced to move back into his aging parents’ guest room in suburban Chicago.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, my doorbell rang.

I was sitting in the living room playing with Hailey, her tiny fingers clutching onto my pinky finger as she cooed happily against the rattle on her play mat.

I walked to the front door and opened it.

Liam stood on the porch. He looked hollowed out. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, and his eyes were bloodshot and desperate. He looked like a man who had jumped out of an airplane without a parachute and only realized halfway down that gravity was real.

"Claire," he choked out, his voice trembling as he clutched the railing. "Please... you have to talk to your lawyer. You have to tell the judge it was a mistake."

I didn't step outside. I didn't invite him in. I leaned against the doorframe, looking at him with absolute, profound pity.

"A mistake, Liam?" I asked quietly. "Embezzling eighty thousand dollars, buying a condo for your mistress, lying under oath, and trying to leave your newborn daughter destitute... was that a mistake, or was that just who you really are?"

"I lost everything!" Liam sobbed, a pathetic, ugly sound breaking from his throat as tears spilled down his cheeks. "My job is gone. Federal investigators are auditing every bank account I've touched in five years. My parents won't even look me in the eye. Chloe blocked my number. I have nothing left, Claire. We're husband and wife... aren't you going to help me?"

I let out a soft, humorless sigh.

"We won't be husband and wife much longer, Liam," I said. "Marcus tells me the fast-track divorce decree will be finalized by the end of the month. You’ll keep your federal charges, your debt, and your ruined career. I’ll keep my daughter, my peace, and my dignity."

"Claire, please—!" he reached out, desperate to grab my arm.

I stepped back and slammed the heavy front door right in his face, throwing the deadbolt lock into place with a sharp, echoing click.

Outside, I heard him slump against the porch steps, weeping openly into his hands. But I didn't open the door. I turned around, walked back into the warm, bright living room, scooped my beautiful baby girl into my arms, and breathed in the sweet, innocent scent of her hair.

The nightmare was over. The trap had sprung. And the rest of our lives was just beginning.
