Chapter 3 - The Secret Asset TrailThree days after the disastrous dinner party, the reality of my new life began to take shape.

Liam had moved into a downtown hotel room paid for by his corporate expense account—or so he thought. What he didn't know was that the moment he walked out of our house, my attorney, Marcus Vance, had filed an emergency injunction freezing all joint bank accounts, corporate credit cards, and investment portfolios tied to his name.
I sat at the kitchen island of our suburban home while Hailey slept peacefully in her bassinet upstairs. The morning sun poured through the windows, illuminating the quiet, orderly space. No shouting. No slamming doors. No walking on eggshells waiting for Liam to come home from his "late meetings."
My phone buzzed on the counter. It was an encrypted email from Marcus containing a preliminary financial audit of Liam’s corporate accounts and personal expenditures over the last fourteen months.
I opened the document and scrolled through the itemized list.
My breath hitched.
It wasn't just a simple affair with a random coworker. The woman’s name was Chloe Vance—no relation to my lawyer—who happened to be the senior vice president of marketing at Liam’s firm. And she wasn't just his mistress; she was his business partner in a secret side LLC they had formed six months ago using embezzled corporate funds and siphon-transfers from our joint savings account.
Over eighty thousand dollars of our family savings had been funneled into a down payment on a luxury penthouse condo in downtown Chicago, registered entirely under Chloe’s name.
He wasn't just planning to divorce me, I realized, a cold shiver running down my spine. He was planning to leave me destitute, bankrupt, and legally liable for corporate fraud.
My phone rang immediately after reading the file. It was Marcus.
"Did you get the audit, Claire?" Marcus asked without preamble.
"I'm reading it now," I said, my voice tight. "Eighty thousand dollars? He bought a condo with my savings?"
"Worse than that," Marcus said grimly. "Because those funds were moved out of a joint account during an active marriage without your signature, it’s technically marital property concealment. But because he used corporate channels to launder the transfer through his LLC, we have federal securities fraud leverage against both him and Chloe."
"Can we trap them?" I asked, a fierce, protective maternal instinct surging through my veins.
"We don't just trap them, Claire," Marcus chuckled darkly on the other end of the line. "We’re going to let him file his initial divorce response first. He thinks he’s playing chess. Let’s let him make his opening move, claim you're an unstable stay-at-home mother with zero independent income, and demand full custody and zero alimony. Once he signs those legal affidavits under oath, we drop the criminal embezzlement and fraud charges right onto the judge's desk."
A slow, vindictive smile spread across my face. "Do it. Let him dig his own grave."
"By the way," Marcus added before hanging up. "You have a visitor downstairs in your driveway. A very panicked woman who claims she needs to speak with you about Liam."
I frowned, walking over to the living room window and parting the blinds.

Parked at the curb was a sleek, black BMW. Standing by my front porch, wringing her hands nervously and wearing an expensive designer trench coat, was a woman who looked like she had just stepped out of a corporate boardroom nightmare.
Chloe Vance had come to pay me a visit.
