Chapter 4 - The Mistress at the DoorI adjusted the cardigan over my shoulders, walked steadily to the front door, and pulled it open.

Chloe Vance looked older in person than she did in her corporate LinkedIn profile. Her immaculate blonde blowout was slightly windblown, her makeup was cakey around her eyes from crying, and her designer heels were sinking slightly into our front lawn grass.
"Claire," she breathed out, steadying herself against the doorframe. "Thank God you’re home. We need to talk."
I didn't invite her in. I stood blocking the doorway, my arms crossed over my chest, looking her up and down with icy indifference.
"You have a lot of nerve showing up at my house, Chloe," I said smoothly.
"I know, I know, I look insane," Chloe stammered, tears welling in her eyes. "Liam didn't tell me you had kids! He swore to me you were separated, that you guys were just living together as roommates for the baby's sake until the paperwork went through! He lied to me, Claire!"
I let out a short, humorless laugh. "Oh, spare me the innocent victim routine. You’re a senior vice president at a major firm. You knew exactly who I was when you texted him during our dinner dates, and you certainly knew whose money bought your new downtown penthouse."
Chloe flinched, her face flushing crimson. "The... the penthouse. Look, Liam told me he owned that property fair and square! But this morning, my corporate email was locked, HR put me on administrative leave, and our company accounts were frozen by federal auditors! Liam won't answer my calls. He’s ghosted me!"
"Let me get this straight," I tilted my head, studying her pathetic panic with detached amusement. "You helped a married man embezzle eighty thousand dollars of family money to buy yourself a luxury condo, and now that the federal authorities and corporate compliance are investigating you for fraud, you came to me for help?"
"I didn't know about the embezzlement!" Chloe sobbed, her mask of corporate sophistication completely shattering. "Liam said it was his stock options payout! If I lose my job, my career is over! I’ll never work in finance again! Please, Claire... you can drop the fraud charges if you talk to your lawyer. We can settle this quietly!"
I stepped slightly closer to her, lowering my voice until it was a harsh, razor-sharp whisper.
"Listen to me very carefully, Chloe," I said, locking my eyes onto hers. "Your career was over the second you decided to sleep with a married man and help him rob a mother and her newborn baby. Liam used you, and you used him. You deserve each other. Now, get off my property before I call the police and have you arrested for trespassing."
Chloe stared at me in absolute horror, realizing there was no sympathy, no weakness, and no negotiation to be had here.
Without another word, she turned around, tripped over her own designer heels, caught her balance, and practically sprinted back to her BMW, tires screeching as she tore down the suburban street.
I closed the front door, locked the deadbolt, and walked back to the kitchen.
My phone buzzed immediately. It was a text message from an unknown number—Liam.
“You crossed a line, Claire. Sending auditors after Chloe? You're going to pay for this. I'm filing emergency papers tomorrow morning for full custody of Hailey, and you won't get a single dime of my salary. See you in court.”

I stared at the screen, smiled softly, and replied with three simple words:
“Can't wait.”
