Chapter 5 - The Glass Conference Room

Back at Carter Towers, the morning sunlight poured into the fifty-fifth-floor executive conference room, illuminating a massive mahogany table surrounded by leather chairs.
Emily sat near the center of the table, wearing a brand-new, impeccably tailored cream-colored silk blouse and charcoal trousers that Mrs. Gable had ordered for her at dawn. Her hair was styled in soft waves, and a light application of foundation expertly masked the fading bruise on her cheek.
Across the table sat Harrison and two corporate restructuring specialists from Carter Global, reviewing documents with calm precision.
The heavy glass door swung open, and Matthew walked in, holding a fresh tablet in his hand. He took a seat at the head of the table, his dark eyes instantly locking onto Emily with a reassuring warmth.
“How are you feeling this morning, Emily?” he asked, ignoring the corporate files for a moment.
“I feel like I’m living in a dream,” Emily admitted, offering a small, grateful smile. “Mrs. Gable told me about the federal marshals. She said Diane was arrested at the front door.”
“She was,” Matthew replied smoothly, sliding a thick leather-bound folder across the table toward her. “And as of twenty minutes ago, the federal receiver has officially invalidated every fraudulent contract your stepmother signed over the last three years. The original Vance Logistics company—along with your father’s personal estate trust—has been restored to its sole legal beneficiary.”
Emily stared at the folder, her hands trembling slightly as she opened the cover. Inside lay the original deeds to her family’s properties, her father’s handwritten will, and a clean corporate charter naming her absolute majority shareholder of Vance Holdings.
“I... I don't know what to say,” Emily whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek and landing softly on the paper. “All these years, I thought I was trapped. I thought I had no power, no family left, nowhere to go.”
“You were never powerless, Emily,” Matthew said, his voice dropping to a low, intense hum that vibrated through the silent room. “You were just surrounded by scavengers who were terrified of what would happen if you ever figured out how strong you really were.”

Harrison cleared his throat politely from across the table, breaking the charged silence between them. “Mr. Carter, there’s one more item requiring your immediate signature. The restructuring of the Ambrose-Vance merger debt. Since Mr. Ambrose’s firm attempted to execute an illegal human trafficking transaction under the guise of a corporate buyout, our legal division has moved to seize his primary shipping terminals in Tacoma.”
Matthew didn't take his eyes off Emily. “Execute the seizure. Leave Ambrose with nothing.”
