Chapter 4 - The Knock on the Mansion Door

At 7:30 AM, the morning sun broke through the lingering mist over the exclusive suburban enclave of Bellevue, casting brilliant light across the manicured lawns and stately brick facade of the Vance estate.

Inside the grand foyer, Diane Vance paced back and forth across the imported Italian marble floor, her face twisted in a mask of furious panic. She clutched a gold-plated coffee mug in one hand while frantically punching numbers into her smartphone with the other.

“Damn it, pick up!” she hissed, slamming the phone against her ear as yet another call to her corporate lawyer went straight to voicemail.

The night had been an absolute disaster. Mr. Ambrose had fled the house in a rage at midnight after Emily escaped through the bathroom window, canceling the twenty-million-dollar buyout agreement and vowing never to do business with the Vance family again. Worse still, when Diane checked her corporate accounts at dawn to pay off her domestic staff, every single business and personal account had flashed a glaring red FROZEN notice.

Heavy footsteps echoed on the front porch, followed by a loud, authoritative knock on the mahogany double doors.

Diane’s face lit up with a surge of manic relief. She rushed toward the door, throwing it open, expecting to see her lawyer or perhaps a team of private investigators she had hired at 3:00 AM.

Instead, standing on the porch were two federal marshals in dark tactical vests, flanked by two local police detectives and a stern-looking man in a sharp gray suit carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

“Diane Vance?” the lead marshal asked, his voice flat and professional.

“Yes?” Diane stammered, her manicured fingers digging into the edge of the doorframe. “What is the meaning of this? I’m a respected member of the Bellevue business community—'”

“You are currently being served with a federal warrant for arrest and asset seizure,” the man in the gray suit interrupted, stepping forward and flashing a stack of legal documents. “Issued by the United States District Court of Western Washington, on behalf of Carter Global Holdings and the rightful estate heir, Emily Vance.”

Diane’s breath caught in her throat. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a corpse caught in sunlight.

“Carter?” she whispered, her voice trembling violently. “Matthew Carter? That’s... that’s impossible. Matthew Carter doesn't care about backwater logistics firms—”

“He cares about embezzlement, false imprisonment, and human trafficking,” the marshal said coldly, stepping past her into the grand foyer as two officers unclipped their cuffs. “Step away from the door, Mrs. Vance. Your house, your bank accounts, and your assets are now under federal receivership.”

Neighbors walking their dogs across the quiet street stopped in their tracks, staring in stunned silence as federal agents began hauling boxes of documents out of the front doors of the Vance mansion, while Diane—screaming curses and threats that no one listened to—was led down the front steps in handcuffs.
