Chapter 6 - The Federal ConfrontationAt 5:30 PM, the rain returned over Chicago, sweeping cold and heavy across the industrial brick alleys of 4th Street.

Inside the dark, sprawling interior of my father's former accounting warehouse, a single overhead bulb illuminated the concrete floor.
I stood in the center of the warehouse, wearing my black wool coat, my hands tucked into my pockets, my posture unshakeable.
The heavy sliding steel doors of the warehouse were thrown open with a loud, grinding CRACK.
Grant and Celeste rushed into the building, drenched in rain, Grant carrying a heavy leather duffel bag, his right hand tucked inside his jacket pocket resting on the grip of a concealed pistol.
When Grant saw me standing alone under the single light bulb, a cruel, vicious smile touched his face.
"You really are your father's daughter, Nora," Grant sneered, stepping across the concrete floor toward me. "Arrogant enough to think you could blackmail a man who already killed two people."
He pulled a dark, suppressed automatic pistol from his jacket pocket, pointing the barrel straight at my chest.
"Hand over the hard drive, Nora," Grant commanded, his eyes burning with lethal fury. "Or you're going to join your mother and father under the dirt."
Celeste stood behind him, laughing hysterically. "Shoot her, Grant! Shoot her and take the drive!"
I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I simply looked at Grant with a calm, pitying expression.
"You forgot one detail, Grant," I spoke softly into the quiet warehouse.
"What detail?!" Grant spat.
"My father was a forensic accountant," I answered softly. "I am a strategist."
BOOM!
High-intensity floodlights suddenly exploded to life from every corner of the massive warehouse, blinding Grant and Celeste in a sea of white light.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" high-powered megaphones boomed through the building.
Twenty heavily armed FBI tactical officers flooded through the side doors, their automatic rifles raised, painting red laser dots across Grant's chest and head.
Special Agent Marcus Sterling stepped through the front entrance, holding a federal arrest warrant.
Grant dropped his gun onto the concrete floor, his hands trembling violently as he raised them in total surrender, while Celeste shrieked and collapsed onto her knees, weeping in pure, hopeless terror.
"Grant and Celeste Vance," Agent Sterling declared, his voice echoing cleanly through the warehouse. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, and two counts of First-Degree Murder."

Heavy steel handcuffs clicked around their wrists, dragging their crying, broken bodies out into the rain toward waiting federal transport sedans.
The debt was paid. The murderers were caught. The truth was spoken under the light.
