Chapter 3 - The Purge of the HarringtonsMy mother, Sheila Harrington, rushed forward from her chair, her hands shaking frantically as she tried to grab my arm.

"Elena! My sweet girl!" Sheila wept groveling, desperate tears, her voice dripping with sudden, nauseating affection. "You're a Fleet Admiral! Oh, thank God! I always knew you were special! Please, Elena... tell these officers it's a family misunderstanding! Vanessa didn't mean it! She's your sister!"
I looked down at my mother's hands on my arm.
For twenty years, this woman had ignored my birthdays, forgotten my calls, and praised Vanessa for marrying a Navy Admiral while treating me like an unpaid servant during every holiday gathering.
I gently, firmly pulled my arm from her grip.
"Don't touch me, Sheila," I said flatly. "You didn't have a sweet girl when I was twenty-two and working three jobs to pay my way through the Naval Academy. You had a golden daughter named Vanessa, and a burden named Elena. You chose your side twenty years ago."
Sheila flinched as if I had struck her across the face. She stumbled backward into her chair, weeping pathetic, silent tears of shame.
Commander Vance stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Vanessa Harrington-Cole," Commander Vance declared. "You are under arrest for Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, Charitable Embezzlement, and Conspiracy."
CLICK. CLICK.
The cold steel cuffs locked tightly around Vanessa’s wrists behind her back.
Vanessa thrashed wildly, screaming at her husband, screaming at her mother, her face contorted in a mask of manic, pathetic rage as she was forced down the central aisle toward the ballroom doors.
"ETHAN! HELP ME!" Vanessa shrieking hysterically, her tears smearing her expensive makeup. "I'M YOUR WIFE! YOU CAN'T LET THEM TAKE ME! ELENA IS DOING THIS TO DESTROY US!"
Ethan Cole stood frozen, his eyes fixed on the floorboards, refusing to look at her as she was dragged out into the rainy night in total, public disgrace, surrounded by news cameras that had gathered at the gates.
My relatives stood frozen along the walls, trembling, terrified to look me in the eye.
My uncle, Richard Harrington—who had spent ten years mocking my 'boring government job'—stepped forward, bowing his head deeply.
"Admiral... Elena..." Uncle Richard stammered, his voice trembling. "We... we didn't know... if there's anything the family can do—"

"The family will do nothing," I interrupted, my baritone dropping into a cold, absolute register. "Because as of eight o'clock tonight, the Harrington Estate and all associated family trusts have been placed under federal receivership to satisfy the twelve million dollars in restitution owed to the Fallen Heroes Trust."
A collective moan of terror swept through the room as my relatives realized that their luxurious lifestyles, funded by Vanessa's stolen charity money, had just been wiped out in a single evening.
