Chapter 2 - The Audit of the FallenThe ballroom descended into utter, chaotic silence as the two CID investigators—Lead Investigator Commander Marcus Vance and Special Agent Rachel Hayes—walked down the central aisle toward Table One.

Vanessa backed against the velvet curtains, her breathing ragged, sweat beading along her hairline.
"ELENA! THIS IS A LIE!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking into manic, frantic shrieks as she grabbed Ethan's sleeve. "Tell them, Ethan! Tell them I manage the charity’s regional board! I’m the president! I would never steal from veterans!"
Ethan turned his head slowly, looking down at his wife's hand on his sleeve. His expression was hollowed out, cold as ice.
"Ethan..." she whimpered.
"Six days ago," Ethan spoke softly, his voice trembling with a terrifying, heavy realization, "I asked you why three million dollars had been transferred from the trust’s private endowment fund into a shell account in the Cayman Islands registered under 'V-Carter Logistics.' You told me it was for offshore medical supplies for injured sailors."
"It was!" she lied frantically. "It was for medical equipment!"
Commander Marcus Vance pulled a thick leather binder bound by bright red federal seals from his briefcase, setting it flat onto the primary table beside the memorial portrait of my late father, Thomas Harrington.
"Miss Vanessa Harrington-Cole," Commander Vance announced, his baritone echoing clearly through the high ceilings. "At six-thirty p.m. today, the Federal District Court issued an emergency arrest warrant and asset seizure decree against you and your primary shell entities."
Vanessa’s jaw sagged open. "Asset seizure...?!"
Special Agent Rachel Hayes stepped forward, tapping a digital tablet screen that projected live financial logs onto the ballroom’s central presentation screens.
The entire Harrington family watched in total, speech-bound horror as certified forensic audit reports filled the screens:
EMBEZZLED CAPITAL: Over thirty-six months, Vanessa had systematically siphoned twelve point four million dollars from the Fallen Heroes Maritime Trust to fund her personal wardrobe, luxury properties in Miami, and private jets.
THE COVER-UP: To prevent my late father from reviewing the foundation’s books before his death, Vanessa had bribed his personal accountant and falsified his medical power of attorney.
THE CONSPIRACY TO SILENCE: Two weeks prior, when my private intelligence team began probing the Cayman accounts, Vanessa had hired two private investigators to track my movements in Washington, believing I was merely a low-level government clerk attempting to blackmail her.
"You tore my dress tonight, Vanessa," I spoke softly, stepping around the primary table, "because you thought exposing my body would humiliate me in front of the family. You thought making me look 'hideous' would shatter my confidence so I wouldn't speak up during the trust reading."

I reached down, picking up the torn piece of emerald silk from the floor, holding it between two fingers.
"These scars were earned in the South China Sea seven years ago," I said, my voice ringing with absolute, unyielding truth. "While you were using stolen veterans' money to buy diamond bracelets, I was pulling forty-three burning sailors out of a sinking command vessel."
