Chapter 6 - Prom NightOn Saturday evening at 5:00 PM, the spring sun bathed our front lawn in golden, sparkling light.

A white luxury limousine pulled up to our driveway, its chrome wheels gleaming under the trees.

The front doors of our home opened.

Lily walked out onto the porch.

She looked breathtaking.

The emerald silk gown caught the golden sunlight like liquid emeralds, the hand-beaded bodice sparkling like stars. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, soft updo with small pearl pins, her radiant skin glowing with pure, unadulterated happiness.

Beside her walked her prom date, Ethan—a handsome, polite boy wearing an immaculate black tuxedo with a matching emerald silk boutonniere.

Standing near the limousine were Arthur Sterling, my closest neighbors, and Lily’s favorite teachers from school, who had all gathered to cheer her on.

Lily stepped down the porch stairs, her heels clicking softly against the concrete, her face lit up by a smile so bright it illuminated the entire street.

She stopped in front of me, wrapping her arms around my neck in a deep, tight, and loving embrace.

“Thank you, Mom,” Lily whispered into my ear, tears of joy shining in her eyes. “For fighting for me.”

I held my daughter tight against my chest, pressing a soft kiss against her cheek, feeling a deep, weightless peace settle into every corner of my soul.

“Always, sweetie,” I promised softly. “Always.”

Ethan held the limousine door open for her, helping her slide the emerald silk skirt safely into the plush leather interior.

As the limousine pulled away down the sunlit street, heading toward the grand ballroom at the lakefront hotel, Arthur stepped up beside me, handing me a glass of champagne.

“To victory, Claire,” Arthur smiled, clinking his glass against mine.

“To my daughter,” I corrected warmly.
