Chapter 5 - The Insolvency of VanessaBy Friday afternoon, twenty-four hours before prom night, the financial liquidation of Vanessa’s life reached its absolute, inescapable conclusion.

Without her $78,000 annual school counselor salary, and with her name blacklisted across every educational institution in the state, Vanessa was unable to secure secondary employment.

To avoid a pending criminal trial for felony theft, Vanessa’s defense attorney negotiated a civil settlement with Arthur Sterling: Vanessa agreed to pay $3,600 in direct restitution to me, plus $5,000 to Lily’s college trust fund, financed through the immediate sale of her private vehicle.

At 3:00 PM, a tow truck arrived at Vanessa’s apartment complex, hoisting her sleek white Audi onto the flatbed to satisfy the court-ordered restitution judgment.

My phone rang while I was sitting on our patio sipping tea.

It was Mom.

I picked up the line, setting it on speaker.

“Claire...” Mom wept through the speaker, her voice stripped of every drop of her usual arrogant, manipulative power. “Claire, please... they towed Vanessa’s car! She can't pay her rent next month! The state licensing board opened a formal revocation hearing!”

I took a slow sip of my tea, looking at the sunlit garden.

“Actions have consequences, Mom,” I replied smoothly.

“She’s your sister!” Mom screamed, her voice cracking into pathetic, desperate squeaks. “How can you be so cold?! She made one mistake! You’ve destroyed her life over a piece of cloth!”

“It wasn't a piece of cloth, Mom,” I corrected deadpan. “It was Lily’s hard work. It was her joy. And it was the moment I finally realized that you and Vanessa have been leeching off my family for ten years.”

“I am your mother!” Eleanor sobbed. “You owe me respect!”

“Respect is earned, Eleanor,” I whispered back, my voice clear, sharp, and absolute. “And as of today... you and Vanessa are blocked from Lily’s life forever.”

I ended the call, blocked Eleanor’s landline, and walked upstairs to check the final steaming of the emerald gown.
