Chapter 7 - Under Starlight

That evening, Daniel and I hosted a small dinner party at our penthouse apartment to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the museum project.

The living room was filled with close friends, architectural colleagues, and supportive peers. There was no forced tension, no walking on eggshells, and no toxic family members lurking in the shadows waiting to drop a bomb.

As I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the glittering city lights, the front door opened and Mark walked in.

He looked lighter, healthier, and genuinely at peace. The perpetual stress lines around his eyes had vanished. He walked over to me, holding a bottle of expensive champagne, and smiled.

"Congratulations on the museum contract, Claire," Mark said, pulling me into a warm, friendly hug. "You earned every inch of it."

"Thank you, Mark," I said, pulling back and smiling. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm fantastic," he laughed, raising his glass slightly. "Turns out, getting rid of a toxic parasite is the best skincare routine a man can ask for. I'm traveling to Europe next month for work, and for the first time in five years, I’m actually excited about the future."

"I'm so glad," I told him sincerely.

Across the room, Daniel caught my eye. He gave me a subtle, reassuring nod, communicating a depth of understanding and partnership that couldn't be shaken by gossip, manipulation, or family guilt.

I looked back out at the city lights, thinking back to that cold Christmas night under the crystal chandeliers when my sister had tried to humiliate me and steal my life. She had wanted to reduce me to the invisible, dependable sister who swallowed her pain and smiled for the camera.

Instead, she had forced me to finally burn down the fragile illusions my family had built, clearing away the rot to make room for something real.

Daniel walked up beside me, wrapping his arm securely around my waist—not with the staged, performative grip Ashley had forced upon him months ago, but with a steady, loving warmth that belonged entirely to us.

"Penny for your thoughts?" he whispered near my ear.

I leaned my head against his shoulder, smiling out at the starlit skyline. "Just realizing," I murmured, "that some things are worth fighting for. And some people are better left behind."

Daniel kissed the top of my head, and for the first time in my life, everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.
