Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of a Mastermind

Back in the city, reality resumed with a swift, merciless efficiency.
Daniel and I checked into our first joint marital counseling session on Tuesday afternoon. The therapist, a sharp, no-nonsense woman named Dr. Sterling (no relation, thankfully), didn't let Daniel hide behind excuses. She forced him to dissect why he needed external validation from his sister-in-law and why he had chosen secrecy over honesty. It was brutal, painful, and entirely necessary.
Meanwhile, Mark’s divorce lawyer moved with lightning speed.
On Wednesday morning, a process server tracked Ashley down at Mother’s house and handed her formal divorce papers, complete with a signed affidavit from Mark detailing financial dissipation, marital abandonment, and emotional infidelity. Attached as Exhibit A to the legal filing was a high-resolution, crystal-clear digital copy of the photograph taken by the wedding photographer under the Christmas tree—capturing Ashley draped across Daniel’s lap, smiling triumphantly at the camera.
Mother called me three times on Wednesday afternoon, her voice hysterical.
"Claire, you have to help her!" Mother sobbed into the phone. "Mark is freezing her bank accounts! He’s demanding she return the designer bags and jewelry he bought during their marriage! And she got a letter from his lawyer saying her social club memberships are being revoked! She has nowhere to go!"
"She can get a job, Mother," I replied coldly, sitting at my desk in my office at the architectural firm. "She’s thirty-two years old. It’s about time she learned how to support herself instead of living off men she manipulates."
"How can you be so cruel?" Mother wailed. "She’s your sister!"
"No, Mother. She’s an adult who spent years blowing up her own life and blaming everyone else for the debris," I said. "And if you keep enabling her, she’s going to drag you down right along with her."
I hung up the phone and blocked Mother’s number for forty-eight hours. I needed quiet. I needed space to breathe, to work, and to rebuild the foundation of my own life with Daniel, who was proving every single day through his actions—not just his words—that he was committed to earning back my trust.

By Friday, the shockwaves of Ashley’s collapse had reached the rest of the extended family. Aunt Susan and Uncle Robert called to check on me, expressing their quiet shock over what Ashley had done. For years, they had suspected Ashley was unstable, but Mother had always managed to spin the narrative. Now, with Mark’s public divorce filing and the undeniable truth circulating through family group chats, the illusion had shattered permanently.
Ashley was entirely alone.
