Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in Room 302The main briefing room of the State Capitol was packed to absolute capacity. Over two hundred journalists sat shoulder-to-shoulder, while satellite feeds broadcast the event live to over twenty million viewers across the country.

When the double doors at the back of the auditorium opened, the room fell into a dead, reverent silence.
I walked down the central aisle toward the podium, flanked by my father on my right and Eleanor Vance on my left. I was no longer wearing the altered pale-blue dress from the night before. I wore a custom-tailored ivory wool suit, my hair swept back, the silver oak-leaf locket resting proudly against my lapel—a symbol of a past restored and a future entirely under my control.
I stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone. Flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm, but I didn't blink. I didn't hide. I looked directly into the primary camera lens in the center of the room.
"Good morning," I said, my voice dropping into a clear, resonant tone that filled every corner of the hall. "Twenty-four hours ago, I was spoken of in a public ballroom as a woman without a history, without a family, and without a future."
The room remained completely still; even the sound of typing on laptops ceased.
"For twenty-seven years, I believed that my value as a human being was defined by what I lacked," I continued, taking a slow, steady breath. "I allowed myself to remain in the shadows, helping build the career of a man who believed that love was a transaction and loyalty was disposable."
I paused, looking directly at the section of the gallery where Alexander had just been escorted by security guards to watch the broadcast under law enforcement supervision. Our eyes met across the vast room. He looked small, broken, and utterly defeated.
"Yesterday, my true identity was restored to me," I said, my voice rising with unshakeable authority. "I am Julianna Kingston. I am the daughter of Governor Richard Kingston and the late Evelyn Kingston. But more importantly, I am a woman who understands the true value of truth, justice, and accountability."
I pulled a thin blue binder from my leather folder, opening it before the press corps.
"Effective immediately, I have filed for a total annulment of my marriage to Alexander Whitmore on the grounds of fraud and systemic financial deception," I announced. "Additionally, my legal team has submitted forensic evidence to the District Attorney exposing the illegal transfer of public development rights from Senator Whitmore’s office to private corporate entities."
A sudden murmur swept through the journalists, but I held up my hand, commanding instant silence once again.
"Furthermore," I concluded, looking back into the primary camera lens, "I am establishing the Evelyn Kingston Foundation for Missing and Abandoned Children, backed by an initial fifty-million-dollar endowment from my personal trust. We will ensure that no child left without a name ever feels alone, powerless, or forgotten again."

The room erupted into thunderous, standing applause. Reporters leapt to their feet, shouting questions, but I didn't need to answer them.
I turned away from the podium, taking my father’s arm as we walked together toward the exit, leaving the chaos, the press, and the ruined remains of Alexander Whitmore behind us forever.
