Chapter 4 - The Boardroom AmbushThe glass-walled executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Mercer Logistics tower in downtown Manhattan offered a breathtaking view of the East River. But inside the room, the view was entirely ignored in favor of the simmering panic around the mahogany table.

Grant Mercer sat at the head of the table, sweating through his custom-tailored Italian suit, loosening his silk tie with a trembling finger. Six senior board members sat in stony silence, staring at a set of audited financial statements that laid out a catastrophic three-million-dollar cash shortfall.

"Gentlemen, please," Grant stammered, forcing an unconvincing, desperate smile. "The liquidity crunch is entirely temporary. Once the port expansion contracts with the Caruso syndicate are fully integrated next quarter, our revenue will—"

"Your revenue is non-existent, Grant," interrupted Thomas Vance, an elderly board member who had served alongside Arthur Mercer for thirty years. "You’ve been bleeding the company dry to cover your personal debts at the underground casinos in Atlantic City. Don't sit there and insult our intelligence by blaming market conditions."

Grant’s face turned mottled red. "Watch your tone, Thomas! I am the majority shareholder and CEO of this company. My father built this empire, and I—"

Click.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Every head at the table whipped around.

In strode Roman Caruso, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, his hands tucked casually into his pockets, radiating an effortless, terrifying dominance. But what stopped the breath in every board member’s throat wasn't the mafia boss.

It was the woman walking right beside him.

Evelyn Caruso stepped into the boardroom with the poise of a queen reclaiming her throne. She wore a sharp, tailored black coat, her posture immaculate, her dark eyes scanning the room with absolute authority.

Grant leaped out of his chair, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse. "Evelyn? What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be on your honeymoon in Milan!"

"My honeymoon can wait, Grant," Evelyn said smoothly, walking right up to the head of the table. She didn't look at her brother with fear or hesitation; she looked at him the way an executioner looks at a condemned prisoner. "Especially when my family's legacy is being driven into bankruptcy by an incompetent thief."

Grant stuttered, looking frantically between his sister and the syndicate boss standing ten feet away. "Roman! Tell her to get out of here! This is a private corporate meeting—she has no legal standing—she’s just my sister—!"

Roman walked slowly over to the master presentation screen at the front of the room, pulled a sleek black flash drive from his pocket, and plugged it directly into the media console.

"She isn't just your sister anymore, Grant," Roman said, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. "She is my wife. And as of twenty minutes ago, through a series of legal asset transfers executed by my corporate attorneys, my syndicate now owns seventy-four percent of the voting shares in Mercer Logistics."

Absolute chaos erupted around the table. Board members began shouting over one another, papers rustling frantically as the realization hit them.

Grant stumbled backward against the wall, clutching his chest, his eyes wide with stark terror. "No... that's impossible! You agreed to a peace treaty! You said you only wanted—"

"I wanted your absolute ruin," Roman corrected coldly, turning around to face him. "And thanks to the master encryption key your sister provided this morning, every single illegal wire transfer, offshore tax evasion scheme, and municipal bribe you’ve executed over the past three years is currently being transmitted to the United States Department of Justice, the IRS, and the Manhattan District Attorney."

On the massive screen behind Roman, lines of encrypted data began scrolling down in bright green text, displaying bank account numbers, shell company names, and Grant’s personal signature on fraudulent invoices.

Evelyn stepped forward, standing directly beside her husband, looking down at her trembling brother.

"You always thought you were the smartest man in the room, Grant," she said softly, her voice echoing in the dead silence of the boardroom. "You thought you could beat everyone by trading people like property. But you forgot one simple rule of the underworld."

She smiled coldly.

"Never underestimate someone who has nothing left to lose."
