Chapter 3 - The Alliance of ShadowsThe morning sun cast a cold, pale light across the manicured lawns of the Caruso estate, but inside the private executive study on the ground floor, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of dark espresso, burnt tobacco, and impending war.

Roman sat behind a massive walnut desk, reviewing a thick dossier detailing Grant Mercer’s personal financial accounts, offshore holdings, and illicit real estate transactions. Across from him sat Rocco, his most trusted enforcer and head of security—a heavy-set man with a permanent scar across his cheek and the cold, dead eyes of a shark.

"The board of directors at Mercer Logistics is meeting in Manhattan this afternoon," Rocco reported, laying a printed schedule on the desk. "Grant is planning to announce a major restructuring to cover up a three-million-dollar liquidity deficit. He thinks he’s safe now that he's tied his name to ours through the wedding."

Roman didn't look up from the dossier. His jaw was clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. "He thinks the marriage bought him immunity. He thinks because he traded his sister to a monster, the monster will protect him from his own stupidity."

"What do you want us to do, boss?" Rocco asked, shifting his weight. "Do we hit the Brooklyn warehouses? Do we freeze his personal accounts through our shell banks?"

"No," Roman said coldly, looking up. "Not yet. A public war right now would trigger federal oversight, and the last thing we need is the FBI sticking their noses into our new maritime acquisitions. We dismantle him from the inside out. Legally, quietly, and completely."

The heavy oak door of the study clicked open.

Evelyn walked in. She had changed into a tailored charcoal pantsuit and a high-necked silk blouse that completely concealed her scars, her dark hair pinned back with professional precision. She looked less like a newlywed bride and more like a senior corporate strategist ready to execute a hostile takeover.

Rocco blinked in surprise, instinctively standing up out of respect, though his eyes darted toward Roman for permission.

"Leave us, Rocco," Roman commanded quietly.

"Boss, are you sure—"

"I said, leave us."

Rocco nodded once, grabbed his leather folder, and slipped out of the room, closing the heavy door behind him.

Evelyn walked straight to the desk, ignoring the chair opposite Roman, and placed a sleek black flash drive right beside the financial dossier.

"What is that?" Roman asked, his eyes narrowing in analytical interest.

"That," Evelyn said, her voice steady and razor-sharp, "is the master encryption key to Grant’s personal offshore server in the Cayman Islands. My father set it up three years before he died, and Grant was too arrogant and lazy to change the security protocols. It contains every unrecorded bribe, every municipal payoff, and every shell company account he’s used to embezzle funds from Mercer Logistics since our father had his stroke."

Roman stared at the flash drive, then slowly raised his gaze to meet hers. A slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of his mouth—not a cruel smile, but one of profound, intoxicating respect.

"You had this the entire time?" Roman asked, his voice laced with disbelief.

"I’ve had it for eighteen months," Evelyn replied calmly. "I was waiting for the right moment to burn Grant to the ground myself. But my brother made a critical error when he walked me down that aisle yesterday. He assumed I was a passive victim waiting to be slaughtered."

She leaned forward, resting her palms on the edge of the mahogany desk, bringing herself face-to-face with the most feared man in New York.

"You want my brother’s empire? I want my brother destroyed," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet whisper. "Let’s collaborate, husband. Let's show Grant what happens when you sell something that doesn't belong to you."
