Chapter 4 - Blood and VengeanceThe next two hours were a blur of blinding pain, desperate screams, and surgical precision.

While Dr. Aris Thorne worked furiously at the foot of the bed, barking orders for sterile towels, surgical clamps, and IV fluids, I remained glued to Grace’s side. I held her hand so tightly my own fingers went numb. I whispered every promise I had ever made to her, wiping the cold sweat from her forehead, pouring every ounce of my remaining soul into keeping her anchored to the living world.

Elena had not left the room. She stood rigidly by the far window, arms crossed over her chest, watching the medical emergency unfold with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a lab experiment.

"Christian... I can't... it hurts too much..." Grace sobbed, her back arching off the mattress as another massive wave of pain tore through her.

"Push, Grace! Push for me, my love, you're almost there!" Aris urged, his face slick with sweat as he leaned forward, his hands steady despite the chaos in the room. "I see the head! One more big push, Grace! Come on!"

With a final, earth-shattering cry that seemed to rip open the very fabric of the room, Grace pushed with every last atom of her strength.

Then... a sound cut through the heavy air.

A high, thin, furious wail.

The sound of new life.

Aris lifted a tiny, squirming, blood-slicked infant into the air, quickly clamping the umbilical cord before wrapping the baby in a warm blanket. A choked, hysterical laugh bubbled up out of my throat, tears finally breaking free and spilling down my cheeks as Aris carried the baby over and placed him gently into Grace’s trembling arms.

"It's a boy," Aris smiled tiredly, wiping his brow. "He's strong, Christian. Miraculously, despite everything, he's healthy."

Grace pulled the tiny baby against her chest, sobbing uncontrollably as she kissed his damp forehead. "My baby... oh, my sweet baby boy..."

I pressed my lips to Grace’s temple, my heart swelling to a size that felt impossible to contain. For a few brief seconds, the violence of the world outside faded away. There was only Grace, our son, and the fragile miracle we had fought through hell to reclaim.

Then, the cold reality of the room returned.

I looked up from the bed.

Elena was still standing by the window, watching the mother and child with a look of quiet, calculating disdain.

"You have your heir, Christian," Elena said softly, stepping forward as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. "Now that the drama is over, let us handle this properly. The boy can be raised within the estate by a qualified nanny, and as for Grace... well, a tragic medical accident during childbirth is a very common occurrence in our world. It will tie up all loose ends cleanly."

The air in the room turned absolute zero.

Grace clutched the baby closer to her chest, letting out a terrified gasp.

I gently stepped away from the bedside. I didn't say a word. I holstered my gun, walked across the floor with slow, deliberate steps, and before my mother could react, my hand shot out and clamped around her throat, driving her backward until her spine slammed hard against the heavy oak door.

May you like

Elena choked, her hands flying up to claw at my wrist, her pale blue eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated terror. "Christian... what... what are you doing?"

"You think you've won because a new life was born into this house?" I whispered, my voice dropping into a dark, terrifying abyss that made the very walls seem to shudder. "You think you can dictate who lives and who dies in my family? You are no longer the head of this house, Elena. You are a prisoner."
