Chapter 6 - The UltimatumThat evening, the phone at my father’s house didn't stop ringing.

First, it was Daniel. His voice was frantic, breathless, and soaked in absolute terror.

“Elena! Please! What did you do?! The bank cards are declined! I tried to buy groceries and the register flashed a federal fraud warning! Mom is having a panic attack, the police are at the house asking questions about asset transfers—please, pick up the phone!”

I didn't pick up. I let it go straight to voicemail.

Then came the text messages. Dozens of them. Apologetic, frantic, pleading.

“I’m sorry, Elena. I was stupid. Mom pushed me into it, I swear. Just call off your lawyers. Please come home.”

I deleted every single one without reading past the first sentence.

Around 8:00 p.m., the doorbell rang.

My father and I were sitting at the kitchen table, sharing a quiet cup of coffee and reviewing the preliminary asset recovery report Marcus had just emailed over.

Dad stood up, walking toward the front hallway. I followed closely behind him.

Dad pulled open the front door.

Standing on the porch was Daniel. He looked a wreck. His hair was uncombed, his shirt wrinkled, and his eyes were bloodshot and wide with panic. Behind him in the driveway sat my black SUV, idling with its headlights cutting through the evening gloom.

"Elena," Daniel breathed, taking a desperate step forward. "Thank God. Please... you have to call off your investigators. The bank locked all our accounts. Mom’s credit cards are blocked. We can't even pay our utility bills."

My father stood in the doorway, blocking his entry like a stone wall. "You don't belong here, Daniel. Step away from the door."

"Dad, please!" Daniel cried out, ignoring my father and looking directly at me with pathetic desperation. "Elena, talk to me! We're husband and wife! How could you do this to us? To me?"

I stepped out from behind my father, walking onto the porch into the cool evening air. My ankle still ached slightly, but I stood tall, my shoulders back, my chin held high.

"You stole my money, Daniel," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "You and your mother conspired to lock me out of my business accounts, strip my savings, and leave me stranded on a sidewalk with our baby while you played king in a house bought with stolen control."

"It was just a temporary arrangement!" Daniel stammered, shaking his head frantically. "Mom said—"

"Stop blaming your mother!" I snapped, the sudden sharpness in my voice making him flinch. "You are a grown man, Daniel. You made the choice to betray your wife. You made the choice to watch me struggle while you sat in comfort."

Daniel swallowed hard, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "What do you want? Do you want a divorce? Is that it?"

"Yes," I said calmly. "Full custody of Lucas. Unrestricted return of every single dollar you and your mother siphoned from my corporate accounts, plus legal fees. And the SUV? It was already mine. But I'll take it back legally, along with the title transferred solely into my name by tomorrow morning."

Daniel stared at me, horror dawning in his eyes. "You're... you're destroying us."

"No, Daniel," I replied, turning my back and walking back toward the warm, brightly lit doorway of my father's house. "I’m just taking back what was mine all along."

As I stepped inside and closed the heavy wooden door, locking it securely behind me, I heard Daniel breakdown sobbing on the porch.

I didn't look back.
