Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Vance HoldingsBy 5:00 p.m. the following afternoon, the dark, toxic web that the Vance family had built around my life was completely, historically dismantled.

The freeze on Vance Holdings LLC triggered an immediate default notice on the mortgage for Diane’s waterfront house in Tacoma. Because Trevor had used the stolen funds as collateral for a secondary crypto-trading margin account, the sudden freezing of the capital resulted in a complete liquidation of his firm by the brokerage house.
In less than thirty-six hours, the arrogant, entitled family who had treated me like a servant inside my own home had lost their house, their business, their savings, and their social standing.
I sat on the velvet sofa in my sunlit living room, holding a warm cup of Earl Grey tea, watching the evening sun dip below the horizon, painting the Seattle sky in sweeping tapestries of gold, indigo, and deep sapphire.
My home felt clean. The air felt light. The suffocating weight that had rested on my shoulders for three years was completely gone.
My phone buzzed on the coffee table.
It was an incoming video call from the King County Correctional Facility.
I set my tea down, picked up the phone, and pressed accept.
The screen illuminated, showing Mark sitting in a small, sterile visitation room wearing an orange jumpsuit. His eyes were red, his cheeks hollow, his posture completely broken. Behind him, sitting at the secondary table, was Diane, her hair wild, her floral blouse replaced by a gray inmate sweatshirt, weeping softly into her hands.
"Rachel..." Mark choked out through the screen, his hands pressing against the glass divider. "Please... talk to me... Mom is facing felony assault charges... Trevor lost the house in Tacoma... we have nowhere to go..."
I looked at him through the screen.
I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel hatred. I felt only a vast, weightless, and absolute indifference.
"You had nowhere to go three years ago when I met you, Mark," I spoke softly, my voice calm, steady, and clear. "I gave you a home. I gave you my trust. I gave you my love. And you repaid me by feeding your mother lies so she would slap me in my own bedroom while you watched."
"I'm sorry, Rachel!" Mark screamed, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on his face. "I was stupid! I was jealous of your success! I thought if I controlled the money, you'd never leave me!"
May you like
"You were right about one thing, Mark," I said, a subtle, beautiful smile touching my lips. "I am never coming back."
I tapped the red button on the screen, disconnecting the call, permanently blocking the number, throwing the phone onto the cushion beside me.
