Chapter 4 - The Injunction at King CountyAt 2:15 p.m., the high-ceilinged interior of Courtroom 4B at the King County Superior Court felt colder than the waters of the Pacific.

I sat at the petitioner’s table wearing an immaculate dark navy tailored suit, my hair pulled back into a tight, professional knot, my hazel eyes holding an unshakeable, sovereign clarity. Beside me sat Lucas Vance, flanked by two junior forensic accountants carrying heavy black ledgers.

Across the aisle, sitting at the respondent’s table, was Mark.

He wore a wrinkled dress shirt he had pulled from his duffel bag, his hair uncombed, his face pale and sunken. Beside him sat his younger brother, Trevor—a twenty-eight-year-old in a cheap suit who was looking around the courtroom in nervous, sweat-slicked panic—and their court-appointed public defender.

Diane was not present; she was still being processed in the holding cell at the municipal jail down the street.

Judge Marcus Vance—a severe, sixty-year-old jurist with iron-gray hair—stepped up to the bench, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the thick file before him.

"This is an emergency petition for temporary restraining orders, asset freezes, and an ex-parte eviction confirmation," Judge Vance declared, his baritone echoing off the oak panels. "Counselor Vance, present your primary evidence."

Lucas Vance stood up fluidly, holding an encrypted flash drive.

"Your Honor," Lucas spoke cleanly, "we present certified bank ledgers from Chase Private Client proving that over a three-year period, the respondent, Mark Vance, systematically stole $284,500 from the sole pre-marital property account of Rachel Sterling."

Trevor jumped out of his chair at the defense table. "THAT'S A LIE! That money was a family loan! Mark told us Rachel approved every transfer!"

SLAM!

Judge Vance slammed his gavel down with a sharp, thunderous crash that made Trevor jump in terror. "Sit down, Mr. Vance! You will speak when spoken to, or I will hold you in contempt immediately!"

Mark buried his face in his trembling hands, a low, pathetic whimpering sound escaping his throat.

"Furthermore, Your Honor," Lucas continued, laying a second document flat on the bench, "we have included the certified police incident report from seven o'clock this morning, detailing the physical assault of the petitioner by Diane Vance, alongside sworn affidavits proving Mark Vance facilitated the illegal entry."

Judge Vance looked over his glasses at Mark, his eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying disdain.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Vance spoke softly, every word dropped like a stone into deep water. "You entered a pre-marital residence owned entirely by your wife, allowed your mother to physically strike her, and then attempted to prevent her from calling emergency services while you systematically looted her accounts?"

"Your Honor... please," Mark wept, looking up with bloodshot, groveling eyes. "I love my wife! I made a mistake! I was just trying to help my family!"

"You didn't help your family, Mr. Vance," Judge Vance declared flatly. "You committed grand larceny."

The judge raised his pen, signing three heavy legal orders with sharp, sweeping strokes.

EMERGENCY ASSET FREEZE: All bank accounts associated with Mark Vance, Trevor Vance, and Vance Holdings LLC are immediately frozen by federal order.
