Chapter 5 - The Trial of the House of CardsThree weeks after the execution of Protocol 7, the grand trial of State of Illinois v. Brendan Morrison & Diane Morrison commenced at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse in downtown Chicago.

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity with journalists, financial analysts, and high-society figures who had gathered to watch the historic collapse of the Morrison dynasty.
Brendan sat at the defense table wearing a dark orange correctional jumpsuit, his hands cuffed at his waist, his dark hair unkempt, his face gaunt and hollowed out by twenty-one days of pre-trial detention. Beside him sat Diane, her designer tweed replaced by grey prison fleece, her manicured nails broken, weeping silent, bitter tears into her hands.
I sat in the primary witness stand, wearing an immaculate ivory silk dress that celebrated my eight-month pregnancy, my dark hair shining like polished ebony, my voice clear, steady, and sovereign as I delivered my formal testimony.
"For three years," I testified, looking directly into the jury's eyes, "Brendan and Diane Morrison used my family's heritage trust to fund their extravagant lifestyles, while treating me with systemic cruelty. On the night of October twenty-fifth, when I was seven months pregnant, Diane Morrison dumped a bucket of freezing, dirty water over my head while my ex-husband laughed."
Prosecutor Marcus Vance played the high-definition security audio captured by the Grand Regency Hotel's dining room systems:
[AUDIO LOG: 21:14:02]
DIANE: "At least you finally took a bath!"
BRENDAN: [LOUD LAUGHTER] "Give her forty, Mom said! She's carrying extra luggage!"
JESSICA: [GIGGLING] "Don't get that smell on the good linen!"
The jury gasped in collective, horrified revulsion. Several female jurors looked at Brendan and Diane with absolute, weightless disgust.
Judge Margaret Vance slammed her heavy wooden gavel flat against the sound block with an echoing THWACK.
The verdict was unanimous and absolute:
BRENDAN MORRISON: Convicted on fourteen counts of Aggravated Wire Fraud, Corporate Pension Embezzlement, and Tax Evasion. Sentenced to eighteen years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary without possibility of early parole.
DIANE MORRISON: Convicted of Accessory to Financial Fraud, Misappropriation of Trust Assets, and Misdemeanor Assault. Sentenced to eight years in state custody.
TOTAL RESTITUTION: Complete liquidation of all Morrison family personal assets, real estate, and vehicle collections, with $65 million returned directly to the employee pension fund and Bennett Capital.

Brendan fell flat onto his face on the defense table, sobbing hysterically, screaming my name as bailiffs dragged him and his mother down the central corridor toward the holding cells below.
I walked out of the courthouse holding my head high, flanked by Arthur Vance and my legal team, step by step stepping into my true, unbroken future.
