Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost HeirBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor medical suite of the Vance Global Building in downtown Chicago was transformed into a high-security tactical sanctuary.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security officers stood guard. Inside the sunlit surgical suite, a team of top private obstetricians worked tirelessly to stabilize Grace.

At 3:45 AM, the loud, clear, miraculous cry of a newborn baby echoed through the surgical wing.

I stood beside Grace’s bed, holding our healthy eight-pound baby boy—Leo Julian Rossi—wrapped in a soft ivory fleece blanket. Grace lay back against her pillows, her dark hair neatly brushed, her face pale but radiant with tears of pure, weightless joy as she touched our son's soft cheek.

Standing at the central mahogany table in the adjacent private lounge were my legal counsel, Bridget Colton, and two federal forensic accounting experts.

Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers flat onto the table toward me:

THE MORETTI DOCK TRUST: Certified forensic logs proving Eleanor Rossi and Dr. Adrian Vale were paid $30 million via offshore Cayman accounts to surrender Leo’s future voting proxies to Victor Moretti.

THE FORGED SURRENDER PAPERS: Legal documents bearing forged signatures claiming Grace Rossi was mentally incompetent and had voluntarily surrendered her parental rights.

THE SOVEREIGN ROSSI CHARTER: Original family trust deeds confirming that Grace Rossi and Leo Rossi hold joint fifty-one percent common equity control over the entire Rossi Maritime Trust upon Leo’s birth.

My jaw clenched into solid iron as I read the documents.

"They didn't just want to hide her, Bridget," I whispered, my voice carrying a quiet, terrifying weight. "They wanted her to give birth in that basement, steal my son, and let Grace die of sepsis so the paper trail would end forever."

"Yes, Julian," Bridget Colton confirmed softly, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional satisfaction. "Eleanor signed the private mortuary transfer orders four days ago."

Grace looked up from her bed, tears overflowing her lashes, her hand reaching out to hold mine.

"Julian... what about your family's board meeting tomorrow?" Grace asked softly. "Eleanor told the syndicate elders that you had stepped down to handle a personal crisis."

I walked over to my wife's bedside, dropping flat onto one knee, taking her cold hand into my broad, calloused palm, kissing her knuckles with deep, eternal reverence.

"I haven't stepped down, Grace," I promised, my deep baritone dipping into an iron oath that shook the very walls. "Tomorrow morning... we destroy them all."
