Chapter 2 - The Purge of The Linden RoomDaniel Mercer fell onto his knees right on the dining room carpet, his hands clutching together in a frantic, groveling plea.

"Mr. Voss! Please! I didn't know!" Daniel wept, sweat pouring down his temples, ruining his stiff collar. "I was just enforcing corporate policy! Miss Carter has a history of paying for customers out of pocket—it disrupts our accounting software!"
"Corporate policy?" Eleanor Voss spoke up, her clear, regal baritone ringing through the room. She stood up from her chair, her posture tall and unbending despite her eighty-two years. She looked down at Daniel with absolute, weightless revulsion.
"Sophie Carter earns sixteen dollars an hour," Eleanor declared, placing her warm, frail hand over my cold fingers. "She has eight hundred dollars in her savings account, an eleven-year-old car with failing brakes, and an ailing mother whose heart medication isn't fully covered by insurance. Yet she didn't hesitate to spend twelve dollars and forty cents—nearly an entire hour of her life's labor—so an old woman wouldn't feel ashamed in public."
Eleanor looked at her grandson. "Adrian, clean this room."
Adrian didn't hesitate. He pulled a secure satellite phone from his jacket, tapping the screen once.
Within ninety seconds, the heavy rear service doors of the restaurant swung wide open. Marcus Vance—Adrian’s chief of private security—stepped inside, flanked by four broad-shouldered officers in tailored dark suits.
"Mr. Voss," Marcus bowed his head respectfully.
"1. TERMINATION: Daniel Mercer is fired immediately for gross misconduct, systemic workplace harassment, and violation of the Voss Family Code," Adrian commanded flatly. "Seize his corporate keys, his digital badges, and clear his office by four o'clock." "2. AUDIT: Initiate a full forensic audit of Mercer’s management accounts over the last twenty-four months. If there is a single penny of wage theft or tip withholding from the waitstaff, file criminal fraud charges with the State's Attorney." "3. APPOINTMENT: Effective immediately, The Linden Room’s operations are transferred under the direct oversight of the Voss Foundation."
"NO! MR. VOSS! PLEASE!" Daniel shrieked as Marcus Vance caught his arms, lifting him off his knees and dragging him out through the rear service exit in total, public disgrace.
The twelve wealthy patrons sat in total silence, staring at the floorboards, terrified that Adrian’s wrath would turn toward them next.
Adrian walked over to where I stood, reaching out with a large, calloused hand, gently taking my worn leather purse from my shoulder, setting it down on a nearby chair.
"Miss Carter," Adrian spoke softly, his gray eyes searching my face with an intense, unreserved respect. "You challenged me five minutes ago. You asked me what good my power was if I didn't use it to help people."
May you like
I swallowed hard, my breath catching in my throat. "I... I didn't know who you were."
"It doesn't matter who I am, Sophie," Adrian murmured, his voice dropping into a tender, deep register that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "You were right. And starting today, you are never going to worry about rent, car brakes, or your mother's medicine again."
