Chapter 4 - The Fall of the AssistantSophia Reynolds thrashed her hands frantically, screaming at the security team as two female federal marshals stepped up to the head table.

"THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!" Sophia shrieked, her manicured fingers pointing at me. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS! VINCENT OWNS THIS COMPANY! I AM HIS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER!"

Bridget Colton stepped forward, opening a thick leather binder, sliding a set of certified arrest warrants onto the table in front of the city council members:

THE PENTHOUSE FRAUD: Certified transaction records showing Sophia Reynolds using forged corporate expense vouchers to siphon $1.2 million from the Moretti Family Foundation into her private accounts.

THE EMPIRE LEAKS: Encrypted text logs proving Sophia had been selling Moretti Global shipping schedules to rival cartels in Detroit in exchange for offshore real estate holdings.

THE ALLERGY EVIDENCE: Text messages from three days ago showing Sophia intentionally ordering the chestnut cake from the bakery, knowing full well I was severely allergic, in an attempt to trigger a medical emergency while Vincent was with her.

The entire ballroom went dead quiet once more.

Vincent turned his head slowly, looking at Sophia with an apocalyptic, soul-shattering fury that made the young woman stumble backward into her chair.

"You... you tried to poison my wife?" Vincent whispered, his voice dropping into a quiet, terrifying register that made even the guards shudder. "You tried to kill my unborn child?!"

"Vincent! NO! IT'S A LIE! SHE FRAMED ME!" Sophia wept hysterically, dropping onto her knees on the marble floor.

"Lead Marshal," Bridget Colton commanded smoothly. "Execute the warrants."

CLICK. CLICK.

The cold steel handcuffs locked tightly around Sophia's wrists behind her back. She thrashed and shrieked pathetic pleas as federal marshals dragged her out of the Chicago University Club in total, public disgrace, surrounded by news cameras capturing her downfall for the evening news.

Vincent took three frantic steps toward the stage where I stood beside his grandfather.

"Claire!" Vincent wept openly in front of three hundred elite guests, dropping onto both knees at the foot of the stage, holding his hands up in a desperate, groveling plea. "Claire, my God! I didn't know! I swear to you on my life I didn't know about the cake! I swear I didn't know about the leaks! Please... let me come home! Let me be a father to our baby!"

I looked down at the man who had ruled Chicago with an iron fist, kneeling in his ruined tuxedo, sobbing at my feet.

I pulled off my gold wedding band—the ring he had given me five years ago when I was a naive girl who believed his promises.

I dropped the ring onto the floorboards in front of his knees.

"You had five years to be a husband, Vincent," I stated softly, my clear, velvet voice echoing cleanly off the walls. "And you traded your wife and your child for a diamond bracelet. Do not ever approach me or my child again."

I turned my back on him, stepping off the rear of the stage flanked by Marcus Vance and Old Anthony, walking out into the bright night air as a free, sovereign queen.
