Chapter 3 - The Unmasking at the Faculty ClubThe following afternoon, the grand dining hall of the Chicago University Club was decorated with floral arrangements and silver settings for the annual Moretti Global Philanthropic Gala.

Over three hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, city council members, and senior syndicate elders gathered beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers.

Vincent had organized this gala three months ago to secure political backing for his multi-billion-dollar harbor expansion. It was supposed to be his crowning achievement—the night where Chicago's elite officially ratified his transition from a street boss to an untouchable corporate titan.

At 7:00 PM, Vincent arrived wearing his finest black tuxedo. His posture was tall, but his face was gaunt, hollowed out by twenty-four hours of non-stop legal assault and frantic attempts to locate my location.

Clinging tightly to his left arm, wearing an expensive floor-length red gown and the ten-carat diamond bracelet Vincent had bought for her, was Sophia Reynolds.

Sophia offered a confident, triumphant smile to the photographers, believing that with my departure, she was officially stepping into the role of Donna of the Moretti Empire.

"Look at her," Sophia whispered sweetly into Vincent's ear as they walked down the central carpeted aisle. "She thought she could ruin your night by hiding in a hotel. People are already forgetting her."

Vincent didn't answer. His gray eyes were scanning the room frantically, a dark, suffocating dread knotting in his stomach.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom were thrown wide open!

The string quartet stopped playing mid-note. The chatter among the three hundred elite guests collapsed into an immediate, speech-bound silence.

Walking down the central carpeted aisle, flanked by four broad-shouldered private security guards in dark suits and senior litigator Bridget Colton, was me.

I wore an breathtaking, custom-tailored dark navy silk evening gown that celebrated every line of my tall, radiant figure. My dark hair fell in glossy waves over my shoulders, my hazel eyes shining with absolute, unshakeable victory, inner peace, and sovereign grace.

Down on my right hand rested the magnificent ten-carat emerald signet ring—the official Seal of the Bennett Family Estate.

And pinned proudly over my chest was a small, delicate silver brooch shaped like a baby’s footprint.

Beside me walked Anthony Moretti—Vincent’s seventy-eight-year-old grandfather, the legendary founding Don who had retired to Sicily ten years ago, but had flown into Chicago on my private jet three hours earlier.

Vincent dropped his champagne glass. The crystal shattered flat against the marble floorboards, sparkling wine splashing across Sophia's red dress.

"G-Grandfather...?!" Vincent stammered, his jaw sagging open as his face turned paper-white.

Old Anthony didn't look at his grandson. He walked up the steps to the central stage, taking the microphone from the host, his gravelly, booming baritone echoing through the high-fidelity speakers across the silent ballroom:

"Members of the board, honored guests, and family," Old Anthony declared, his dark eyes flashing with an ancient, terrifying authority. "As the founding Chairman of Moretti Global, I have called this emergency assembly to announce an immediate executive restructuring."

Sophia took a panicked step backward, clutching Vincent's arm. "Vincent... what is he doing?!"

Old Anthony pointed his silver-handled cane directly at Vincent.

"Effective immediately," Old Anthony announced, "Vincent Moretti is formally suspended from all executive duties at Moretti Global for systemic corporate fraud, gross personal misconduct, and breach of family trust. Full voting authority over the South Terminal and fifty-one percent of corporate shares are hereby transferred directly to his lawful wife... Donna Claire Bennett-Moretti!"

The entire ballroom erupted into screaming, frantic chaos!

Photographers shifted their camera lenses away from Vincent, blinding me with a barrage of silver flashes as city council members and supreme court justices rushed forward to offer their congratulations to the new Chairwoman of the empire.
