Chapter 2 - The Command at MidnightBefore I could process his words, Kieran reached into his trouser pocket, pulling out a sleek black satellite phone, dialing a single speed-dial extension.

He put the phone to his ear, his posture broad, tall, and terrifyingly authoritative.
"Marcus," Kieran commanded flatly into the receiver. "Wake up Dr. Sterling at New York Presbyterian. Tell him I need the entire pediatric oncology wing at St. Jude's transferred under Blackwood Medical Trust oversight within thirty minutes. Settle Mateo Torres's eighteen-thousand-dollar balance immediately, and wire five hundred thousand dollars in secondary research funds to his lead physician."
My jaw sagged open in total, speech-bound shock. "Mr. Blackwood... five hundred thousand dollars?!"
Kieran didn't pause. "And Marcus?" he added into the phone, his eyes fixed on my face. "Send my private security transport team to St. Jude's. Place four armed operators outside Mateo's room twenty-four hours a day. If anyone associated with the Moretti Syndicate steps within two blocks of that hospital... eliminate them."
"Understood, Don Kieran," Marcus's voice responded respectfully over the speaker before the line clicked dead.
Kieran lowered his phone, setting it flat onto the kitchen island.
I stood frozen in the center of the kitchen, my breath catching in my throat, tears streaming freely down my face. For eighteen months, I had carried the suffocating weight of medical debt, terror, and isolation entirely alone on my small shoulders. I had spent every waking hour terrified that my brother would die in a cold hospital room because I didn't have enough dollars in my purse.
And in sixty seconds, the most feared mafia boss in New York had erased my nightmare with a single phone call.
"Why...?" I choked out, my voice trembling violently as I looked into his severe, handsome face. "Why are you doing this for me, Mr. Blackwood? I'm just your housekeeper. You don't owe me anything."
Kieran took one slow, deliberate step closer to me, closing the remaining distance between us until I could feel the intense warmth radiating from his broad chest.
He reached out both hands, gently framing my face, his broad fingers tucking a stray strand of brown hair behind my ear.
"You are not just my housekeeper, Saraphina," Kieran revealed softly, every word dropped into the quiet kitchen like a sacred covenant. "For eighteen months, I have watched you walk through these halls. I have watched you work until your hands bled, smile when you were breaking inside, and keep your dignity in a house full of dangerous men."
May you like
His storm-gray eyes burned with a raw, intense, and terrifying devotion that made my heart leap wildly against my ribs.
"I didn't care about the money, Saraphina," Kieran confessed softly. "I was jealous tonight because I thought another man had won the heart of the only woman who has made this cold house feel like a home."
