Chapter 4 - Stepping Into the Fire"Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy silence of the office with surgical precision. "I have managed Mr. Reed’s portfolio, audited every regional acquisition, and tracked the supply chain inefficiencies that the Vance Group has been hiding from us for eighteen months.

Sterling stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, utterly stunned that a twenty-three-year-old assistant had just publicly humiliated him in front of the CEO.
Cameron’s mouth twitched into a slow, undeniable smirk of profound appreciation.
"You heard the lady, Arthur," Cameron said, leaning back in his chair and resting his chin on his knuckles. "The acquisition strategy is changing. If you and your legal team have a problem with that, my door is wide open for your resignations. I’ll have severance packages on your desks by five o'clock."
Sterling glared between Cameron and me with venomous hatred, realization dawning in his eyes. "You're doing this for her? You're throwing away a dynasty for a glorified secretary?"
"Get out of my office," Cameron whispered, his voice dangerously low.
Sterling didn't wait to be told twice. He turned on his heel, stormed out of the room, and slammed the heavy oak door so hard the glass panels rattled in their frames.
The office fell dead silent.
I stood frozen in the center of the room, my breathing shallow, the adrenaline slowly beginning to fade and leaving a hollow, terrifying void in its wake. I had just declared war on the most powerful board member in the company. My job was gone. My reputation in corporate Manhattan was toast.
"Well," Cameron said softly, standing up from his desk and walking slowly toward me. "That certainly solves the problem of keeping a low profile."
I looked up at him, my eyes burning with frustrated tears. "Are you out of your mind? You just gave Sterling enough ammo to push for an emergency CEO ouster at the board meeting next week! And me? I'm going to be fired before lunch!"
"You're not getting fired," Cameron said, stopping right in front of me. He reached out, his warm fingers gently catching my chin and tilting my face up so I had no choice but to look into his stormy gray eyes. "Because you are no longer my executive assistant, Emma."
My breath hitched. "What?"
"Effective immediately, you are my Chief Strategy Officer," Cameron said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic cadence. "With a five-hundred-percent pay raise, an office down the hall, and full executive voting rights."
"Cameron, I can't accept that!" I protested, shaking my head. "Everyone will think—they'll say we're—"
"Let them talk," he interrupted, his thumb gently tracing my cheekbone. The fierce, untouchable CEO was completely gone now, replaced by a man who looked at me as if I were the only anchor he had left in a crashing world. "Let them say whatever they want. For the first time in my life, I don't care about the board, the press, or the family name. I only care about what happens when the office doors close at night."
Before I could process his words, before I could build back the professional walls I had spent years constructing, Cameron leaned down and kissed me.
It wasn't like the desperate, chaotic kiss in the underground club or the whiskey-soaked confession on my couch. This was deliberate. Tender. Devastatingly thorough. His lips were warm and firm, tasting faintly of black coffee, and as his arm wrapped securely around my waist pulling me flush against his chest, every rational thought in my brain simply dissolved.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, my lips were trembling.
"Stay with me tonight," he whispered against my mouth. "Not in your apartment. In my penthouse. Let me show you what real life looks like when we stop hiding behind titles."
