Chapter 5 - The Downfall of Ashford LogisticsBy dawn, the Ashford estate was no longer a symbol of New York high-society luxury; it was a crime scene and a federal asset-forfeiture holding zone.

Flashlights swept through the French windows as teams of federal investigators, forensic accountants, and United States Marshals carted boxes of documents, computers, and hard drives out to waiting vans. The twenty luxury cars in the circular driveway—including Richard’s prized vintage Aston Martin—had bright orange impound stickers slapped across their windshields.
Richard Ashford was not carried out in cuffs; he was led out in zip-ties, flanked by four federal agents, his head bowed in total, public humiliation as flashbulbs from early-morning paparazzi illuminated his tear-streaked face.
Vanessa Sterling had already been taken into custody an hour earlier, her mascara running down her cheeks as she shrieked obscenities at the marshals while being shoved into the back of a black-and-white cruiser.
Upstairs in the master suite, Lily was still sleeping peacefully in her bed, completely unaware of the cataclysmic financial and social earthquake that had leveled her parents' world overnight. My brothers had ensured her room remained untouched, insulated from the chaos by a ring of trusted private security operatives.
I stood by the second-floor bay window, wrapped in a fresh cashmere robe, sipping black coffee as I watched Richard’s private empire being dismantled piece by piece on the front lawn.
Daniel walked quietly into the bedroom, closing the heavy oak door behind him. He held a thick manila folder in his hand.
"How is she?" Daniel asked softly, nodding toward Lily’s closed door.
"Still asleep," I replied, not turning away from the window. "She’ll wake up thinking it was just a wonderful birthday party. She won't understand what happened to her father for a long time. And by then, I intend to make sure she never has to."
Daniel stepped up beside me, leaning his shoulder against the window frame. "The asset seizure is complete. Ashford Logistics is officially liquidated. Marcus Sterling has been ousted from his chairmanship at Sterling Global, and his stock has crashed twenty-eight percent in early European trading. By Monday opening bell, the Ashford name won't even be a footnote in Wall Street history."
I turned my head, looking up at my eldest brother. A profound, weightless peace settled over my chest, completely displacing the lingering ache of the bruises on my back.
"Thank you, Danny," I whispered. "For coming so fast. For... everything."
Daniel placed the manila folder on the antique dressing table and wrapped his arms around me in a fierce, protective embrace. "You should have called us seven years ago, Claire. You never should have married that pathetic excuse of a man."
"I wanted to prove I could do it on my own," I murmured against his shoulder. "I wanted a normal life."
"Normal is for people who don't carry our blood," Daniel said gently, pulling back and looking into my eyes with intense pride. "What happens now? Do you want to stay in New York? Or are you coming home to Boston?"
I looked out at the sunrise breaking over the Hudson River, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of gold and crimson—the exact colors of the silk wrap that had started a war.
"I'm not running, Danny," I said, a cold, sovereign smile touching my lips. "This house... this estate... the court awarded me full emergency custody and sole ownership of the property under the asset forfeiture settlement this morning."

Daniel raised an eyebrow. "You're keeping the Ashford mansion?"
"Consider it my daughter's inheritance," I replied smoothly. "Besides... I rather like the view from the top."
