Chapter 4 - The Midnight AuditThe ballroom had transformed from a glittering celebration of high society into a holding cell of absolute terror. None of the five hundred guests dared to move toward the exits. Armed tactical operatives stood silently beside every door, their hands resting casually on tactical gear, ensuring that no phones were used to contact outside media or law enforcement.

At the center of the room, Richard Ashford hung suspended against the marble pillar, gripped firmly by Nathaniel’s collar-grab, his designer shoes dangling inches off the polished floor. His breathing came in shallow, panicked gasps, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple.

I walked slowly out from the shadows of the doorway, my footsteps light against the marble. The physical pain in my back still flared with every movement, but adrenaline and a deep, righteous vindication carried me forward.

The crowd parted instantly, pressing back against the floral arrangements to clear a wide, terrified path for me. Even Vanessa Sterling had retreated behind her collapsing uncle, her manicured fingers digging into her palms until her skin bled.

I stopped three feet from Richard, looking up into his tear-streaked, panicked face.

"Put him down, Nate," I said softly.

Nathaniel flashed a razor-sharp grin, gave Richard one final contemptuous shake, and dropped him onto the floor. Richard collapsed in a heap of expensive Italian wool, coughing and gasping for air, clutching at his bruised throat.

I knelt down slowly, wincing slightly as my back protested, until I was eye-level with my husband.

"Claire..." Richard wheezed, his voice broken and pathetic. "Please... I didn't know... if I had known your family was..."

"Was what, Richard?" I interrupted, my voice smooth, quiet, and chillingly polite. "Powerful? Wealthy enough to buy and sell your entire lineage? Or did you just assume that because I was quiet, because I chose to stay home and raise our daughter instead of flaunting wealth at charity galas, I was a defenseless orphan you could beat like a dog in a wine cellar?"

Richard shook his head frantically, tears spilling over his eyelashes. "It was Vanessa! She lied about the wrap! She set me up—"

"You didn't ask questions, Richard," I reminded him, my eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You didn't examine the evidence. You didn't care about the truth. You only cared about your ego, your mistress, and your absolute dominance over someone you thought you owned."

Vanessa shrieked from the back of the crowd, her composure completely shattered. "He loves me! You’re just a bitter, frigid bitch who—"

CRACK.

Julian Bennett didn't even look at her. With the casual flick of his wrist, he tossed a heavy, steel-reinforced briefcase onto the floor near Vanessa’s feet. The latch popped open, spilling hundreds of printed financial documents, encrypted email printouts, and wire-transfer receipts across the polished marble.

"Miss Sterling," Julian said, his voice flat and clinical. "Those are the certified records of your personal offshore accounts in the British Virgin Islands, where you and Richard have systematically funneled four point two million dollars from the Ashford Logistics charitable trust over the past twenty-four months."

Vanessa dropped to her knees, frantically gathering the papers, her face turning chalk-white as she realized the full magnitude of her exposure. "This is private... you can't use this—"

"Under federal racketeering statutes, anything tied to an ongoing corporate bankruptcy and criminal embezzlement investigation is public domain, Miss Sterling," Julian replied with a shark-like smile. "Federal Marshals are waiting at your penthouse in Manhattan right now. Your apartment, your luxury cars, and your trust funds have already been seized."

Daniel stepped forward, standing beside me as I slowly rose to my feet. He placed a warm, heavy hand on my shoulder, grounding me in his unwavering strength.

"Claire," Daniel said, his blue eyes softening as he looked down at me. "Do you want him arrested here, or shall we let federal agents drag him out in cuffs at sunrise?"

May you like

I looked down at Richard, who was now weeping openly on the floor, clutching the hem of my trousers like a drowning man grasping at a straw.

"Arrest him now," I said quietly. "And make sure he spends tonight in the exact same cold cell he threw me into earlier this evening."
