Chapter 4 - The Glass Floor CracksThe collective intake of breath across the ballroom sounded like a sudden draft sweeping through a tomb.

Dominic stood frozen, his mouth half-open, his eyes darting frantically from Richard Mercer’s stony, impassive face to my calm, unblinking expression. The silver cuff links he had fastened with such meticulous arrogance two hours ago now looked like cheap tin under the merciless glare of the chandeliers.
"Your... your guest of honor?" Dominic finally managed to choke out, his voice cracking slightly on the vowels. He forced a strained, brittle laugh, trying desperately to salvage his dignity in front of three hundred influential witnesses. "Richard, you must be joking. This is a private family matter. My wife—my soon-to-be-ex-wife—is clearly having some kind of emotional episode. She doesn't belong in this room."
"Your wife?" Richard repeated the word as if it tasted like spoiled milk. He turned his body slightly, shielding me with his broad shoulder as he looked down his nose at Dominic. "Vale, let’s clarify something for the benefit of the room. A wife is someone a man respects, protects, and partners with. What you have at home—or rather, what you had at home until this afternoon—was an unpaid hostage."
Vanessa Quinn pushed her way through the crowd behind Dominic, her emerald silk gown rustling angrily. Her professional facade had completely cracked, revealing the sharp, desperate climber underneath.
"Mr. Mercer, this is completely out of line!" Vanessa injected, stepping up beside Dominic and placing a familiar hand on his arm. "Mrs. Vale was dismissed from the residence because of severe personal instability. Everyone in corporate knows she hasn't been well. If you’re being manipulated into a PR stunt—"
I didn't wait for Richard to reply.
I stepped out from behind Richard’s shoulder, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor as I advanced on Vanessa.
The closer I got, the more Vanessa shrank back, her eyes widening at the cold, predatory calm radiating from me. She had spent ten months whispering behind my back, assuming I was a weak, sheltered housewife who didn't know the difference between a PR crisis and a dinner menu.
"Severe personal instability, Ms. Quinn?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the silent rows of tables. "How fascinating. Because according to the personnel files I reviewed this afternoon, the only instability in Vale Logistics is the sudden, catastrophic drop in public relations value caused by an executive vice president sleeping her way into a corner office."
Vanessa’s face turned the color of curdled cream. "You—you bitch! You have no proof—"
"Proof?" I interrupted smoothly, pulling a crisp, folded document from the diamond-encrusted clutch in my hand and letting it snap open. "This is a certified compliance audit dated three days ago, detailing corporate expense accounts used to fund a luxury penthouse on Michigan Avenue registered under a shell corporation called VQ Holdings. Signed by Dominic Vale himself."
I let the paper dangle in the air for a second before folding it back up.
"Shall I pass copies to the board members seated at table four, or would you prefer to resign before the federal SEC filing hits the newswires tomorrow morning?"
Dominic lunged forward, his hand grabbing for my wrist with desperate fury. "Give me that! You hysterical bitch, you stole those files—"
He didn't touch me.
Before Dominic’s fingers could graze my skin, Miller—the massive driver who had escorted me—appeared out of nowhere. His hand shot out like a hydraulic clamp, catching Dominic’s wrist mid-air and squeezing with enough pressure to make Dominic wince and stumble backward.
"Do not touch the lady, Mr. Vale," Miller said quietly, his voice devoid of all human warmth.
The ballroom erupted into chaotic whispers. Flashbulbs blinded us as half a dozen photographers scrambled to capture the exact moment Chicago’s golden-boy corporate CEO was physically restrained by Richard Mercer’s head of security.
Dominic yanked his arm back, nursing his bruised wrist, his face twisted in a mask of murderous rage and sheer, unadulterated terror. He looked around the room, realizing with horrifying clarity that every ally, every senator, and every major investor was watching his empire disintegrate in real time.
"This isn't over," Dominic hissed, his voice trembling as he pointed a shaking finger at me. "You’re bankrupt, Evelyn! You have nothing! Without me, you’re homeless on the street!"
I smiled—a cold, beautiful, merciless smile that mirrored the ice in his eyes.

"Oh, Dominic," I whispered, stepping close enough that only he could hear my next words. "You forgot who my father was. And you certainly forgot who taught me how to read your ledgers."
I turned my back on him, looped my arm through Richard Mercer’s, and allowed the wealthiest man in Chicago to lead me toward the head table, leaving the shattered remains of Dominic’s life burning brightly in our wake.
