Chapter 3 - The Grand EntranceThe ballroom of the Meridian Hotel was a deafening symphony of clinking crystal flutes, polite laughter, and the relentless flash of professional camera strobes.

Beneath the towering crystal chandeliers, Chicago’s elite circulated in a blur of silk, velvet, and smuggled cocaine. At the center of the room, standing near the dais where the evening’s awards were being announced, Dominic Vale held court like a newly crowned king.
He had one hand tucked into the pocket of his charcoal tuxedo, his silver cuff links catching the light with every casual gesture, while Vanessa Quinn clung to his arm in a plunging emerald gown that practically screamed for attention. She laughed loudly at a joke told by the senior partner of a major downtown law firm, basking in the public validation of being paraded as Dominic’s official partner.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced into the microphone, his voice echoing off the gilded walls. "If I could direct your attention to the main entrance as we welcome our final special guest of the evening—a man whose philanthropic contributions to the Chicago harbor expansion have redefined our city’s future..."
The heavy oak-and-glass double doors at the opposite end of the ballroom swung open.
The conversation nearest the entrance died instantly. Then, the silence rippled outward like a wave across the room until the entire ballroom was holding its breath.
It wasn't because of Richard Mercer—though Richard’s presence alone was enough to make veteran CEOs check their pulse.
It was because of the woman walking on his arm.
A collective gasp swept through the front rows. Society columnists dropped their pens. Across the room, Dominic’s smile froze mid-laugh, his wine glass hovering inches from his mouth as his eyes locked onto the doorway.
I walked into the grand ballroom with my chin held high, the midnight-blue velvet of my gown catching the amber lights and throwing a deep, liquid shimmer across the floor. My hair was sleek, my posture immaculate, and my expression entirely unreadable. I wasn't hiding behind Richard Mercer; I was walking beside him as an absolute equal.
"Good God," someone whispered near the buffet table. "Isn't that... isn't that Mrs. Vale? Where is Dominic?"
Dominic didn't need to ask where I was. He was already staring straight at me, his face draining of all color until he looked as though he had seen a ghost. His eyes dropped from my face down to my wrist, where a heavy, antique diamond bracelet—one of the few genuine heirlooms my father had managed to hide from Dominic’s initial asset seizure—sparked under the lights.
Vanessa’s smile faltered, her hand tightening around Dominic’s arm so hard her knuckles turned white. "Dominic... who is that with Mercer? Why is she wearing—"
"Quiet," Dominic hissed, his voice trembling with a sudden, violent panic. He shoved past a cluster of state senators and began marching across the polished marble floor directly toward us, his composure completely shattering under the weight of three hundred staring eyes.
Richard felt the tension in my arm and slowed his pace, leaning down to whisper in my ear. "He’s coming. Remember, Evelyn—not a single emotion until I give the word."
"I'm entirely ice, Richard," I replied softly.
We stopped near the center aisle, right beneath the massive central chandelier.
Dominic broke through the crowd, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps, his charcoal tuxedo looking suddenly too tight for his frame. He ignored Richard entirely, his burning gaze locking straight onto me.
"Evelyn," Dominic said, his voice rising just enough to carry across the hushed room. "What the hell are you doing here? How did you get in? Security!"
He looked around wildly for a guard, but none came. The hotel security personnel were standing at attention by the doors, looking directly past Dominic as if he didn't exist.
"Good evening, Dominic," I said, my voice smooth, melodic, and entirely devoid of the trembling submission he was used to hearing. "You look flustered. Did you forget something at the penthouse?"
"You—you weren't invited!" Dominic stammered, stepping close enough that I could smell the expensive scotch on his breath mixed with cold panic. "I told you to pack your things and get out! You have no business in this room!"
"Oh, but I do, darling," I smiled, letting the endearment drip with razor blades. "After all, how could I miss the celebration of my own corporate resurrection?"
Dominic stared at me, his brain desperately trying to compute the coordinates of reality. "Your... what?"
Before he could answer, Richard Mercer stepped forward, placing a heavy, proprietorial hand on my shoulder.
"Settle down, Vale," Richard said, his voice cutting through the noise of the ballroom like a knife. "Your wife is here as my personal guest of honor. And if you raise your voice in her presence again, I’ll have my legal team repossess the very floor beneath your feet before you finish your champagne."

The room went dead silent.
Richard Mercer had just claimed me—and threatened to evict Dominic Vale from the very society that had built him.
