Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the LobbyBy ten o'clock that morning, the sun lit up the soaring glass atrium of the Vance Tower on Fifth Avenue. High-powered executives and legal teams moved swiftly across the marble floor, but near the private executive elevator bank, three men were creating a scene, shouting at the head of security.

At the center stood Arthur Sterling.

He was thirty-four, wearing a camel-wool coat that looked expensive but rumpled. His face was flushed, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wild with frantic, greedy desperation.

"I am Arthur Sterling!" he roared, shoving a finger into the chest of a six-foot-two security officer. "That man has my wife! He kidnapped my wife and my newborn twin daughters three days ago! Call the police or let me up to the penthouse!"

"You didn't have a wife when you dragged her into the snow, Arthur," a cold, smooth voice echoed across the vaulted lobby.

The commotion died instantly.

The crowd of executives parted like water, freezing in place as Elias Vance stepped out from the private elevator.

He wore a dark charcoal three-piece suit, his posture fluid, commanding, and absolute. Walking at his left was his lead trial attorney, Sarah Sterling—no relation to Arthur—holding a leather document case, while two broad-shouldered security operators flanked his right.

Arthur turned, his flushed face twisting into a smug, desperate sneer as he saw Elias.

"Vance!" Arthur yelled, taking two aggressive steps forward until Elias's guards blocked his path like iron pillars. "You think because you have billions of dollars you can just steal another man's family?! Ava is my legal wife! Those girls are my legal children! Hand them over, or I'm calling every news crew in Manhattan!"

Elias didn't raise his voice. He didn't flinch. He stopped three feet from Arthur, his gray eyes locking onto the man with an intensity so chilling that Arthur's sneer began to falter.

"Your legal wife?" Elias murmured, his baritone carrying cleanly across the silent lobby. "The woman you dragged out of your apartment four hours after she gave birth?"

Arthur swallowed hard, a bead of cold sweat running down his temple. "She... she was hysterical! She fell! It was an accident!"

"And the severe contusions across her back?" Elias pressed, taking one slow, deliberate step forward until his shadow completely engulfed Arthur. "The hypothermia that nearly stopped her heart? The fact that her two newborn daughters had a core body temperature of ninety-one degrees when I pulled them out from under the Hudson bridge?"

A collective gasp echoed through the lobby. Several onlookers turned to glare at Arthur with undisguised disgust.

"She's a liar!" Arthur shrieked, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch. "She's trying to ruin me! You don't know what she's like, Vance! She gave me useless girls when I needed an heir!"

Elias’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, lethal ice.

Sarah Sterling stepped forward, opening her leather case and pulling out a document stamped with a bright red judicial seal.

"Arthur Sterling," Sarah announced crisply, her voice ringing across the marble. "This is an emergency ex-parte protective order issued two hours ago by the New York State Supreme Court, revoking all your spousal and parental rights due to extreme domestic endangerment, felony abandonment, and attempted homicide."

Arthur froze, staring at the document in total shock. "What... what?! You can't revoke my rights without a hearing!"

"We can, and we did," Sarah stated deadpan. "And furthermore... Mr. Vance has officially purchased the nine-million-dollar secondary debt notes from your Brooklyn loan sharks."

Arthur’s jaw dropped. The color drained from his face, leaving him a sickly gray. "You... you bought my debt...?"

"I own your mortgages, Arthur," Elias whispered softly, leaning in close so only Arthur could hear. "I own your commercial properties. I own your bank accounts. And as of thirty seconds ago... I am executing immediate foreclosure."

Arthur stumbled backward, his knees giving out as he hit the marble floor. Elias's security team stepped forward, lifting his limp, groveling body off the ground to escort him out into the rain.
