Chapter 5 - The Tables Turn

Richard looked from Julian to Maya, his brain desperately trying to compute equations that refused to balance.
"C-Cousin?" Richard laughed hysterically, a manic edge clipping his words. "Are you out of your mind, Julian? She’s an orphan! She worked tables at a local diner! She doesn't even have a college degree! She’s a broke nobody from Queens!"
Maya didn't raise her voice. She didn't scream, cry, or hurl insults. She simply walked around the table, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor, stopping just three feet away from her husband. The sheer composure in her posture made Richard instinctively take a half-step back.
"I was an orphan, Richard," Maya said, her voice smooth, cool, and devoid of emotion. "Because your family’s legal team, led by your great-uncle Arthur, spent decades burying my mother’s existence so your branch of the family could steal control of the Atherton trust."
She reached down, touching the silver orchid resting against her chest.
"You spent seven years treating me like dirt because you believed your wealth and your social standing made you superior," she continued, her eyes locking onto his darting, terrified pupils. "You humiliated me in front of our daughter, you flaunted your mistress in my face, and you believed that without you, I was nothing."
Arthur Vance gripped the edge of the table, his voice trembling with sudden realization. "The orchid... that ring... Victoria’s child survived..."
"She didn't just survive, Uncle Arthur," Julian remarked smoothly, sliding a certified legal document across the table toward Richard. "She inherited. And her first official act as chairwoman of the asset restructuring committee is filing immediate, multi-count felony indictments against Richard Vance for corporate embezzlement, fraudulent asset concealment, and falsification of tax documents."
Richard lunged forward, grabbing the paper. His eyes scanned the legal jargon—forensic audits of the offshore accounts he had set up with Vanessa’s father’s help, records of diverted funds, and signed confessions from junior accountants who had already turned state’s evidence.
"No," Richard whispered, the color draining entirely from his face until he looked like a corpse. "No, this is impossible... you can't do this to me..."
May you like
"Oh, Richard," Maya said softly, turning her back on him as she walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Manhattan bridge. "In a courtroom, I’m just getting started. And as for parental rights... my lawyers have already filed for sole custody of Lily, with a restraining order that ensures you will never, ever touch or speak to my daughter again."
Richard let out a primal, broken sound of absolute defeat, collapsing back into his executive leather chair as the reality of his total destruction finally crushed him into the floor.
