Chapter 4 - The Corporate Execution

The conference room of Vance Logistics was typically a place of arrogant self-assurance. Today, however, it felt more like a condemned cell.

Richard Vance paced back and forth across the plush imported carpeting, his silk tie loosened, sweat beading along his hairline. His phone was pressed frantically against his ear for the fourth time in ten minutes.

"What do you mean, all corporate lines of credit have been suspended?!" Richard roared into the receiver, his face flushing a furious crimson. "We have the municipal transit contract closing on Friday! Call the bank president directly—tell him Richard Vance demands an explanation!"

Across the mahogany table, Arthur Vance—the company’s aging founder and Richard’s uncle—rubbed his temples with a trembling hand. "Calm down, Richard. Yelling at the junior associates isn't going to fix the fact that our primary liquidity vanished into thin air at 8:00 AM."

"It’s Maya," Richard snapped, his voice dripping with venom. "That ungrateful, unstable parasite! She ran off with some of our petty cash, and now she’s probably trying to stir up trouble. When I find her, I’ll—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a sharp, echoing bang.

Richard stopped mid-sentence.

Neither Maya nor a group of disgruntled lawyers walked through the doors. Instead, Julian Sterling strode into the room with the effortless, predatory grace of a apex predator entering an enclosure of wounded deer. Behind him walked Thomas, carrying a stack of thick legal dossiers, followed quietly by Maya herself.

Maya had changed. Gone was the exhausted, frosting-stained housewife of two days ago. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit that fit her with understated elegance, her hair swept up into a sleek chignon, and resting visibly against her collarbone was the silver orchid necklace.

Richard’s jaw dropped so low it nearly hit the table.

"M-Maya?" he stammered, pointing a shaking finger at her. "What the hell are you doing here?! Security! Get this unhinged lunatic out of this building right now!"

Not a single security guard moved. They couldn't; they were currently on Sterling Capital’s temporary payroll.

Julian Sterling walked to the head of the table, placed his hands firmly on the polished wood, and looked directly at Richard with an expression of absolute contempt.

"Mr. Richard Vance," Julian’s voice cut through the tense air like a razor blade. "You are currently trespassing in what used to be your uncle’s corporate subsidiary. As of nine minutes ago, Sterling Capital has finalized the hostile acquisition of Vance Logistics, bought out your remaining debt covenants, and revoked every single executive privilege you ever possessed."

Arthur Vance lurged half out of his chair, his face turning purple. "Acquisition?! You can't just buy us out! We are a privately held regional leader! Who the hell do you think you are?!"

Julian didn't even look at the older man. He turned his head slightly, gesturing respectfully toward Maya as she stepped forward to the head of the table.

"Allow me to introduce the majority shareholder of Sterling Capital, and the sole legal owner of the Atherton Trust," Julian said clearly, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction. "My cousin, Maya Sterling-Atherton."

The room descended into a dead, suffocating silence so profound that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a jet engine.
