Chapter 3 - The Audit at Walter ReedBy 2:00 AM, the emergency trauma suite at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was secured by armed Sentries posted outside the door.

My left arm had been set in a heavy fiberglass cast, stabilized by surgical pins following a three-hour operation to repair the compound fracture in my radius and ulna. Pain medication coursed through my veins, but my heart felt light, free, and completely unbroken.
Sitting near the window, reviewing corporate ledgers and federal search warrants on a military laptop, was lead prosecutor Rachel Vance—my elder sister and a senior attorney for the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
The heavy mahogany door opened gently.
General Robert Hayes walked into the room, carrying two warm cups of tea, setting one down on my bedside table.
"How is the arm feeling, Sarah?" General Hayes asked softly, sitting on the chair beside my bed.
"The surgeon says eight weeks in a cast, General," I answered, offering a soft, genuine smile. "Full recovery expected by spring."
General Hayes looked at my sister, Rachel, who closed her laptop with a sharp, heavy CLACK.
"Rachel," the General asked, "what did the Federal Asset Forfeiture Team uncover in Virginia?"
"Ethan Miller’s logistics firm was a complete front, General," Rachel revealed, her voice sharp as surgical steel. "Over sixteen million dollars in illegal foreign capital was routed through Miller Logistics over the past three years. His mother, Margaret, used her late husband's political PAC to shield the transfers from IRS audits."
I looked out the high glass window toward the moonlit skyline of Washington, D.C., feeling a deep, weightless peace settle into my soul.

"They thought because I kept quiet about the domestic abuse, I was weak," I murmured softly.
"They confused your discipline for weakness, Sarah," General Hayes corrected flatly, taking my uninjured hand into his broad, calloused palm. "They forgot that a soldier who survives enemy fire in a war zone does not tremble before a coward in a suit."
