Chapter 1 - The File on the General’s DeskGeneral Robert Hayes’s voice did not rise above a low, velvet baritone, but it carried an unyielding force that chilled the air inside the silent auditorium.

"Your name is Ethan Miller," General Hayes spoke, his dark blue eyes locking onto my husband’s pale, sweat-slicked face. "You run a secondary logistics firm in Northern Virginia. And for three years, you have believed that your mother, Margaret Miller, and your brother, Jason Miller, could use their connections in the Congressional Finance Committee to protect you from the law."
Ethan took one clumsy step backward, his hands trembling as two Military Police officers flanked him on either side.
"General..." Margaret Miller chimed in frantically, her voice shrill as she rushed down the carpeted aisle, clutching her pearl necklace. "This is a domestic misunderstanding! My son has been under tremendous mental stress! My late husband was Senator Miller—"
"I know who your husband was, Mrs. Miller," General Hayes interrupted flatly, every word dropped into the quiet room like a block of cold granite. "And I know that your late husband’s former staff members are currently under federal investigation for treason, bribery, and corporate wire fraud."
A collective, horrified gasp swept through the five hundred military officers, dignitaries, and journalists sitting in the auditorium gallery.
I lay on the polished floorboards, my right hand cradling my shattered left arm against my chest. White-hot pain throbbed from my wrist to my shoulder, but my mind was laser-sharp. The Purple Heart pinned over my left breast gleamed under the stage spotlights.
General Hayes reached into his inner uniform jacket, pulling out a sealed leather folder bound by red judicial wax seals.
"Three months ago, Captain Sarah Vance—your wife—was deployed under my direct command with Joint Special Operations Task Force 7," General Hayes revealed, turning his severe, carved features toward the audience. "She didn't just earn this Purple Heart by surviving an ambush in Syria. She earned it by intercepting an encrypted satellite ledger that documented illegal weapons transfers passing through a private logistics warehouse in Virginia."

Ethan’s jaw sagged open in total, speech-bound horror. His eyes bulged out of his head as he stared at the red-bound folder in the General’s hand.
"That warehouse," General Hayes added softly, his voice dropping into an apocalyptic register, "is registered under your sole name, Ethan."
