Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Borrowed MansionBy 2:00 AM, the private executive trauma suite at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital in Greenwich was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the grand mahogany double doors, eight armed Vance Security operators stood post. Inside the sunlit suite, my head wound had been set, stitched, and stabilized by Connecticut's top reconstructive surgeons. Wearing a clean dark silk robe, holding a mug of warm chamomile tea provided by staff, I sat in a plush velvet armchair.

Sitting beside my chair, holding my right hand in his broad palm, was my father, Vincent Moretti.

Beside his chair stood Bridget Colton and Maya Lin, holding three heavy, red-sealed leather binders.

"Dad..." I spoke softly, my voice raspy, "Daniel told me for six years that I was penniless... that my grandmother left me with only the Manhattan apartment."

Vincent’s storm-gray eyes locked onto mine, a terrifying fire flashing within their depths. "Explain it to my daughter, Bridget."

Bridget Colton opened the top binder, sliding digital ledgers, wiretap logs, and real estate deeds flat onto the tray table before me:

THE STOLEN MATERNAL INHERITANCE: Certified financial registries proving my late grandmother, Claire Bennett, left an irrevocable $120 million trust fund solely in my name upon her death four years ago.

THE EMBEZZLEMENT & FORGERY: Proof that Daniel Mercer, his brother Michael Mercer, and his mother Patricia Mercer forged my signature on forty-eight corporate deeds, using my $120 million trust collateral to fund their failing private equity firm, buy their Greenwich mansion, and pay for their luxury yachts.

THE SOVEREIGN REAL ESTATE DEED: Original probate titles confirming that Donna Emily Bennett-Moretti was the sole 100% legal equity owner of the entire Greenwich estate, their firm's office tower, and my $2.8 million Manhattan apartment.

My knuckles turned stark white against my teacup.

"They smashed a plate over my head in a mansion that I owned," I rasped out, every word falling like an iron block into the quiet room. "Patricia smiled while blood ran down my face, believing she could steal my grandmother's home."

Vincent Moretti stood up from his chair to his full, imposing six-foot-three height. He adjusted his dark suit cuffs, his face carved from cold, unyielding granite.

"They thought you were an isolated, helpless girl with no family to protect her, Emily," Vincent swore, his deep baritone an iron oath that vibrated through the floorboards. "Tomorrow morning at the Mercer Equity Board Assembly... we show them who rules New York."
