Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Hidden LegacyBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive penthouse suite at The Moretti Tower on Michigan Avenue was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators guarded every corridor. Inside, sitting in a high-backed leather chair, wearing a warm cashmere coat over her green velvet party dress, was Claire Moretti.
Beside her sat Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, an independent legal strategist who had been Claire’s long-time confidante, alongside two federal forensic accounting experts.
Claire sat perfectly still, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea. Her hazel eyes were calm, cleared of all tears, burning with an unshakeable, sovereign inner peace.
"Claire," Bridget Colton spoke softly, sliding three heavy, red-sealed leather binders flat onto the glass coffee table. "The financial and corporate audit you requested three months ago is complete."
Claire set her tea cup down. "Tell me, Bridget."
Bridget tapped the digital ledgers:
THE STOLEN MATERNITY TRUST: Proof that Margaret Moretti and Vanessa Blake systematically diverted $85 million from Claire’s biological family trust (The Vance-Moretti Commercial Heritage Fund) into Panamanian shell accounts over four years.
THE FORGED ANNULMENT FILINGS: Legal documents drafted by Vanessa’s private attorney to force Claire out of the marriage contract upon the five-year mark, claiming Claire was barren and medically unfit for the Moretti bloodline.
THE SOVEREIGN PROXY: Certified probate deeds proving Claire holds sole fifty-one percent common equity control over the entire South Chicago Deep-Water Shipping Berths—the core foundation of Alexander’s commercial empire.
Claire touched the faint, lingering redness on her cheek, her dark lashes lowering for a fraction of a second before lifting with diamond-hard resolve.
"They thought I was a quiet, penniless orphan Alexander picked up five years ago," Claire said, her silver voice carrying a quiet, lethal weight. "They thought I endured Vanessa's presence because I had nowhere else to go."
"They had no idea your father was Arthur Vance," Bridget confirmed flatly. "And tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, when the Moretti Syndicate Board convenes to discuss the annual maritime proxies, you hold total legal power to strip Margaret and Vanessa of every dollar they own."
Before Claire could answer, the double oak doors of the penthouse study were thrown open.
Alexander Moretti stood in the doorway.
His charcoal suit was disheveled, his tie pulled loose, his face pale with utter, catatonic exhaustion and terror. He had searched sixty locations across Chicago in four hours, his men tearing through private residences until Marcus Vance finally admitted that Claire was sitting safely in his own corporate penthouse under federal legal protection.

Alexander took two frantic steps into the room, stopping ten feet from her chair, his broad shoulders trembling as his gray eyes locked onto her face.
"Claire..." Alexander choked out, his baritone breaking into a ragged, weeping rasp. "Claire, please..."
