Chapter 4 - The Interrogation RoomThe interrogation room at the federal detention center smelled of cold steel, bleach, and unadulterated panic.

Brandon sat handcuffed to a bolted metal table, his expensive suit wrinkled, his hair disheveled, staring frantically at the one-way observation mirror. For two hours, his high-priced defense attorneys had tried to block the proceedings, arguing illegal search, entrapment, and administrative error.

Federal prosecutors had shut them down in minutes.

The heavy steel door buzzed and swung open.

I walked into the room alone, carrying a single manila folder, and sat down on the opposite side of the metal table.

Brandon snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot and wide with sheer terror. “Clara... Clara, please!” he blurted out, lunging forward until the handcuffs strained tight against the steel loop. “It was a mistake! It was Gretchen! She manipulated me! She convinced me we needed the money for the expansion! I didn't want to do it, Clara, I swear to God!”

I opened the folder slowly, not looking at him, and slid a single photograph across the table.

It was a picture of little Leo, sleeping peacefully in his nursery, wrapped in a soft blue blanket.

Brandon stared at the photo, his breath catching in his throat. A strange, broken sound escaped his lips. “Is... is that...?”

“Our son,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. “He survived the fall, Brandon. Just like I did. While you were planning your new life with Gretchen and spending blood money on offshore accounts, my baby and I were fighting for our lives in a trauma unit.”

Brandon buried his face in his shackled hands, his shoulders shaking with ragged, pathetic sobs. Not tears of remorse, but tears of absolute self-preservation. “They’re going to put me away for the rest of my life... The prosecutors are talking about life without parole... Clara, please, you’re my wife! Show some mercy!”

“Wife?” I looked up, letting a cold, humorless smile touch my lips. “The moment you pushed me off an icy cliff at nine months pregnant while whispering that I wouldn't suffer long, I stopped being your wife, Brandon. I became your executioner.”

“Gretchen... Gretchen planned the whole thing!” he shrieked, desperately throwing his mistress under the bus. “She had the contacts in the BVI! She found the offshore shell company! She’s the one who wanted the money!”

“Gretchen is currently in the holding cell next door,” I replied evenly, closing the folder with a sharp snap. “And she’s singing a very different song, Brandon. She has already signed a full cooperation agreement detailing every single text message, email, and financial transfer you coordinated to execute my murder.”

He stared at me, the final remnants of his arrogant, corporate facade completely crumbling into dust. There was no escape. No loopholes. No way out.

“What do you want?” he whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. “You took the company. You took the accounts. You took everything.”

“I didn't take anything, Brandon,” I stood up, smoothing down my jacket. “You gave it all away the moment you thought dead women couldn't testify.”
