Chapter 1 - The Ash beneath the Crimson SealThe glass-walled executive penthouse on the sixty-fifth floor of the Glass Tower overlooked the glowing, rain-slicked skyline of Manhattan, but inside, the air was cold, silent, and heavy as iron.

Gideon Ashford stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his broad six-foot-three frame framed against the thunderstorm raging over Central Park. At thirty-six, Gideon was the undisputed titan of Ashford Global Capital—a man whose dark bespoke suits, sharp jawline, and cold storm-gray eyes inspired absolute awe across international markets. He commanded real estate networks, commercial shipping fleets, and private equity funds across three continents.
Yet looking at me, his eyes held no corporate coldness. They held an intense, razor-sharp focus that made my breath catch in my throat.
"Your husband wasn't supposed to survive that night, Vivian," Gideon repeated, his deep baritone carrying an icy weight that dropped the room's temperature to absolute zero.
My hands trembled so violently against the edge of the mahogany conference table that the crimson-sealed gala invitation slipped from my fingers, fluttering onto the leather folder marked CONFIDENTIAL.
"What... what do you mean, Gideon?" I rasped out, my voice breaking into a fragile thread. "Preston was trapped inside the east wing of the chemical research facility... I ran through the burning beams to pull him out..."
Gideon walked slowly toward the table. He reached out, his broad, warm hand gently settling over mine, stopping the frantic shaking of my fingers. His touch was firm, protective, and anchoring—a stark contrast to the cold disgust my husband had shown me for five painful years.
"Preston didn't get trapped by accident five years ago, Vivian," Gideon revealed softly, every word falling like an iron block into the quiet room. "The arson investigation report was buried by corrupt city officials, but my forensic auditors recovered the original field logs last night. The fire was deliberately set by Preston's business partners at Vance Logistics to execute an insurance payout and eliminate Preston before he could audit their offshore accounts."
My eyes widened in catatonic shock. "They... they tried to kill him?"
"Yes," Gideon confirmed flatly. "And you, a twenty-four-year-old assistant who loved him, walked into a furnace, dragged his burning body through seventy feet of flaming debris, and took the full blast of an exploding gas line across your back so he wouldn't burn to death."
Tears of long-suppressed pain spilled over my lashes, hot and bitter against my pale cheeks.
For five years, I had carried the physical and emotional scars of that night. Thirteen skin-graft surgeries had left my back a raised, painful landscape of thick scar tissue. And for five years, my husband, Preston Vance, had rewarded my sacrifice by turning away in disgust, sneering at my body, calling me a disfigured burden, and sleeping with his communications director, Cassidy Vaughn.
"And now..." Gideon tapped the heavy black file beneath my trembling hand. "Preston isn't just cheating on you with Cassidy Vaughn, Vivian. He and Cassidy have spent the last eighteen months funneling $60 million from your father's late estate into Panamanian shell accounts to buy out Vance Logistics before the Founders' Gala."
My jaw locked. The shock that had paralyzed my heart for five years melted away, replaced by a sudden, diamond-hard, terrifying rage.
"They made a backless dress code for the Founders' Gala," I whispered, my voice dipping into a silver blade of absolute clarity. "They wanted me to stand in front of five hundred high-society investors, bare my burn scars to the world, and run away in shame so he could announce his divorce without losing his corporate reputation."

Gideon leaned down, his gray eyes flashing with an cold, lethal fire.
"You aren't running away, Vivian," Gideon swore softly, his baritone an iron vow that shook the very room. "They invited you to a gala to expose your scars. Tonight... we show New York that those scars are the armor of a queen."
