Chapter 6 - The Trial and the VerdictSix months after the night in the dining room, the grand courtroom of the Cook County Federal Building was packed with reporters, corporate leaders, and high-society observers.

Daniel Vance and Vanessa Carter sat at the defense table wearing orange prison jumpsuits, their hands and ankles bound by heavy steel chains.
Daniel looked broken, gaunt, his expensive hair thinned out, dark circles under his hollow eyes. Vanessa sat beside him, weeping continuously, her arrogant demeanor completely erased by months of jail food and isolation.
I walked down the central aisle of the courtroom wearing an exquisite tailored charcoal silk suit, my posture tall, six-foot-tall, and sovereign.
When I took the witness stand, taking the oath with my right hand raised, Daniel looked at me with a desperate, groveling terror.
"Mrs. Sterling," Prosecutor Rachel Hayes asked, "can you tell the jury what happened on the night of October 14th?"
I looked straight into the eyes of the man who had tried to drug me, my clear, velvet voice echoing cleanly off the high marble walls.
"On October 14th," I testified softly, every word dropped with absolute, unbroken truth, "my husband stood by and watched his mistress drop a high-grade chemical weapon into my wine glass. They believed that because I was a quiet wife, I would drink it, forget it, and let them steal my life."
I pulled out my phone, playing the high-definition video recording captured six months prior.
The courtroom echoed with Vanessa's cold, arrogant voice:
"Relax, sis. You can't drink?"
Followed by the sickening sound of the glass shattering against the floorboards as I forced her to swallow her own poison.
The jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes.
The verdicts were unanimous and absolute:
VANESSA CARTER: Convicted of Felony Aggravated Assault, Attempted Poisoning, and Larceny. Sentenced to fourteen years in a state maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of early parole.
DANIEL VANCE: Convicted of Grand Larceny, Corporate Wire Fraud, and Secondary Conspiracy to Aggravated Assault. Sentenced to twenty-two years in a federal facility.

As the judge slammed his gavel down with a sharp THWACK, Daniel thrashed in his chains, screaming my name, begging for a second chance as federal marshals dragged him down to the dark holding cells below.
I walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight, surrounded by silver applause and news cameras, completely, beautifully free.
