Chapter 5 - The Fall of Carter GlobalForty-eight hours later, the Manhattan skyline was shrouded in a heavy gray drizzle.

Inside the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel, hundreds of New York’s top corporate leaders, investors, and media outlets gathered for an emergency press conference convened by the board of Vance-Carter Global.
The room hummed with frantic, electric chatter. News cameras flashed, reporters shouted questions to corporate reps, and the front page of every major business journal carried the same explosive headline:
“CARTER GLOBAL CEO DANIEL CARTER ARRESTED FOR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT, SECURITIES FRAUD, AND TRUST THEFT.”
Beneath the headline was a mugshot of Daniel—his hair disheveled, his designer suit rumpled, his face gaunt and pale as federal marshals led him in handcuffs out of his Midtown apartment.
A secondary bullet point noted that Vanessa Brooks had been indicted as a co-conspirator, facing up to ten years in a federal penitentiary for wire fraud and asset laundering.
When the master of ceremonies took the stage podium, the loud murmurs of the crowd died down to an immediate, respectful hush.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the host announced, his voice echoing through the grand hall. “Please welcome the new Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Vance-Carter Global Holdings—Mrs. Emily Vance.”
The ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
I walked out onto the elevated stage wearing a stunning, fitted emerald-green suit. My hair had been professionally styled into an elegant, sharp asymmetrical bob—a chic, striking cut that made the jagged stubble on my left side look like a deliberate, fierce fashion statement.
I walked with my head held high, my posture regal, wearing the quiet, unshakeable authority of a woman who had walked through the fire and reclaimed her father’s crown.
As I stepped up to the podium, I looked out over the sea of smiling faces, spotting Uncle Marcus and Arthur Sterling standing in the front row, clapping proudly.
I leaned toward the microphone, smiling calmly at the crowd.
“Twelve years ago,” I began, my voice clear, steady, and carrying across the silent hall, “this company was built on a promise of integrity, partnership, and resilience. Somewhere along the way, the man entrusted with leading it forgot that a company’s true value isn't measured by its CEO’s arrogance, but by the truth of its foundation.”
I paused, looking out over the glittering lights of the ballroom.

“Today,” I continued, my voice rising with powerful conviction, “we remove the rot, we reclaim our legacy, and we rebuild this firm on solid, unbreakable ground.”
The ballroom exploded into another wave of deafening applause.
