Chapter 3 - The Frozen VaultThe atmosphere inside the executive boardroom transformed from a corporate dispute into an execution.

Daniel stood paralyzed at the head of the table, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He looked from Marcus to the other board members, searching franticly for a single ally. But every man and woman at that table had been brought into Carter Global through my father’s network. The moment they saw the paper trail detailing how Daniel had systematically attempted to strip forty million dollars out of their pension funds and development accounts, his authority vanished into ash.

“This is a misunderstanding!” Daniel stammered, his sweat-sheened forehead glistening under the overhead lights. “The Apex account was a offshore hedging vehicle! It was designed to protect our European shipping acquisitions from currency fluctuations! Vanessa was merely acting as the administrative trustee!”

“Administrative trustees don't wear your suit jackets in your office while cutting your wife’s hair in the restroom, Daniel,” I replied smoothly.

Uncle Marcus stood up from his leather chair, adjusting his cuffs. He looked down at the forensic audit, then looked at the two armed private security officers standing near the boardroom entrance.

“Effective immediately,” Marcus announced, his voice echoing under the high ceiling, “by unanimous emergency vote of the majority shareholding trust, Daniel Carter is suspended from all executive duties as Chief Executive Officer of Carter Global Logistics. His security clearance is revoked, his corporate accounts are frozen, and a formal report is being submitted to the United States Attorney’s Office.”

“You can’t do this!” Daniel screamed, his composure completely shattering as he slammed his fist onto the table. “I built this company! My name is on the front of the building!”

“My father’s money built this building, Daniel,” I said, stepping closer to him, looking straight into his wide, terrified eyes. “Your name was just on the door. And as of today, we’re taking the lease back.”

Daniel took a frantic step toward me, his hands raised in a desperate, pleading gesture. “Emily, please! Listen to me! We’ve been married for twelve years! We can fix this! I’ll fire Vanessa right now! I’ll get rid of Apex! Just tell Marcus to pull the federal report!”

I looked down at his trembling hands, remembering the way those same hands had held Vanessa’s jacket two hours ago. I remembered how he had stood in the restroom corridor, watching her cry, asking what were you thinking? without ever offering a single drop of comfort to the woman whose hair she had just hacked off.

“You gave me twenty-four hours to realize my marriage was a lie, Daniel,” I whispered, leaning in so only he could hear me. “I’m giving you twenty-four hours to pack your desk before the federal marshals arrive.”

Without waiting for his answer, I turned on my heel and walked out of the boardroom.

As I passed the executive reception area, two security guards were physically escorting Vanessa Brooks toward the elevators. Her designer handbag was stuffed into a cardboard box, tears streaming down her face as she shrieked for Daniel. She looked at me as I walked past, her eyes wild with panic and realization.

She had wanted his money, his status, and his power. She had believed that by tearing me down, she was stepping into the crown.

She hadn't realized that the crown was mine all along—and I had just melted it down.

I stepped into the elevator, pressing the button for the lower basement levels.

Arthur Sterling was waiting for me near the service bays holding a set of heavy, antique brass keys.

“The board meeting went well, I assume?” Arthur asked with a thin, satisfied smile.

“Daniel is suspended,” I answered, wiping a stray strand of cropped hair from my forehead. “Now I need to see what he was hiding at Pier 14.”

Arthur’s smile faded, replaced by a grave, heavy expression. He pulled a thick manila folder from under his arm.

“The Pier 14 warehouse isn't just an offshore storage site, Emily,” Arthur warned softly as we walked toward my car. “Our investigators managed to breach the internal registry an hour ago. What Daniel was storing down there wasn't corporate freight or liquid assets.”

I stopped in my tracks. “What was it?”

Arthur handed me the file. “It’s the original physical ledger from your father’s final venture twenty years ago. The one Daniel swore was destroyed in the harbor fire.”

My chest went tight. “My father’s ledger?”

“Daniel didn't just embezzle forty million dollars from your trust, Emily,” Arthur whispered, his dark eyes locking onto mine. “He’s been living on a lie for twelve years. And what’s inside that ledger proves that Daniel didn't save Carter Global back then. He stole it.”
