Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The trial lasted less than three weeks.
With Mateo Silva presenting the pristine audio recording, Dr. Althaus’s immediate confession in exchange for a reduced federal sentence, and the unassailable digital paper trail linking Santiago to the offshore payoffs, the defense didn't even attempt to contest the facts. They tried to plead temporary insanity and corporate stress, but federal judge Morrison dismissed the motion with extreme prejudice.
Santiago Ramírez was sentenced to twelve years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary with no possibility of parole for the first eight. Ramírez Media was dissolved by federal order, its remaining unblemished assets liquidated and placed into a trust fund under my sole name.
As for Valeria Santos, her influencer career dissolved overnight. Stripped of Santiago’s financial backing, her luxury apartment repossessed by the bank, and her name dragged through every national news outlet as the gold-digging accomplice to a medical conspiracy, she quietly packed her bags and fled the state, her social media accounts deleted into digital oblivion.
It was a cold Tuesday afternoon when I received one final visitor at my new penthouse overlooking Central Park.
The security intercom buzzed. "Mrs. Ramírez, there’s a visitor downstairs insisting on seeing you. A woman. She says her name is Elena Althaus."
I frowned, pressing the button. "Send her up."
Ten minutes later, Elena Althaus—the estranged wife of Dr. Althaus, the surgeon who had performed my illegal sterilization—stepped into my living room. She looked exhausted, carrying a heavy cardboard box filled with old documents and encrypted flash drives.
"Thank you for seeing me, Mrs. Ramírez," Elena said, her voice shaking as she clutched her handbag. "I know my husband is a criminal, and he deserves every year of prison coming to him. But before the federal agents seized his private home safe, I found something he hid behind the drywall in his basement study. Something he didn't even show the prosecutors."
My heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"
Elena placed the cardboard box on my glass coffee table and pulled out a manila folder marked with a red confidential stamp. Inside were medical charts, genetic screening reports, and a secondary audio cassette labeled with Santiago’s handwriting: Project Heir - Confidential.
"My husband wasn't just paid to sterilize you, Mrs. Ramírez," Elena whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "He was paid to harvest your healthy ovarian tissue during the procedure and implant it into a synthetic surrogate carrier funded by Santiago and Valeria two months prior. The child Valeria is carrying... biologically, genetically... it’s yours and Santiago’s."
The room spun. The floor beneath my feet seemed to dissolve into nothingness.
All this time, I thought I had lost everything. I thought my body had been permanently desecrated to make room for another woman's child. But the sick, twisted architect of my husband’s empire had engineered something even more grotesque: he had stolen my biological child from my womb while I slept, transferring our shared flesh and blood into his mistress's body so he could control every single piece of his twisted corporate dynasty.
Elena placed a trembling hand on my arm. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Ramírez. I couldn't keep this hidden. No mother should have her flesh stolen while she's helpless."

I stared at the folder, the shock slowly burning away, replaced by an incandescent, terrifying fire that dwarfed anything I had felt before.
Santiago thought he had won by keeping my bloodline trapped inside his mistress. He didn't understand the fundamental law of nature: you cannot cage a mother's blood and expect it to obey you.
