Chapter 5 - The Fall of the King

It happened precisely at 8:00 PM on a Friday night.
I was sitting in the grand library of our Greenwich estate, a glass of vintage Cabernet in my hand, listening to the roaring fireplace. The heavy oak front doors flew open with a violent crash, followed by the sound of furious footsteps echoing across the marble foyer.
"Mariana! What the hell is going on?!"
Santiago burst into the library. His usually immaculate tailored suit was rumpled, his tie loosened, and his face twisted into an ugly mask of blind, panicked rage. He looked like a man who had just discovered his private jet had turned into lead while flying over the Atlantic.
"Santiago," I said mildly, not even turning my head to look at him as I sipped my wine. "You’re back from New York early. Did the investor summit not go well?"
Santiago slammed both hands down onto the heavy mahogany desk, leaning over it so his face was inches from mine. "Every single corporate account is frozen! My black cards are being declined at restaurants! The board of directors is in absolute mutiny because federal agents seized our primary server racks an hour ago! What did you do?!"
I finally turned my head, setting my wine glass down with a soft clink. I looked at him with an expression of profound, chilling pity.
"I didn't do anything, Santiago," I lied smoothly. "The federal government did. Turns out, conspiring with a corrupt surgeon to forcibly sterilize your wife under a fake cancer diagnosis leaves a very heavy paper trail. Or, should I say, a very heavy audio file."
Color drained entirely from Santiago’s face. The raging titan of industry instantly deflated, his knees buckling slightly as he gripped the edge of the desk for support.
"What... what did you say?" he whispered, his voice trembling violently.
"I said," I repeated, standing up slowly and smoothing down my silk house robe, "that I heard every single word you said outside my hospital door. 'When my wife goes back to sleep, retirem o útero dela...' Did you really think you could play God with my body, discard me like broken furniture, and parade your mistress and her bastard child through my life without consequences?"
Santiago stumbled backward, his eyes wide with sheer terror. "Mariana... Mariana, please. It was a mistake. Pressure from the board, pressure from the succession crisis—Valeria manipulated me, she threatened to ruin the company—"
"Save it for the federal judge, Santiago," a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.
Agent Vance stepped into the library, flanked by two armed federal marshals in tactical gear. Behind them stood Valeria Santos, looking pale and disheveled in her designer tracksuit, flanked by another agent who had just intercepted her arriving at the front gates with her luggage.
"Santiago Ramírez," Agent Vance announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit medical battery, interstate financial fraud, and obstruction of justice. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"No! You can't do this! Do you know who I am?!" Santiago screamed, thrashing as the marshals grabbed his arms and forced his wrists behind his back, clicking the cuffs into place.
Valeria broke down into hysterics, sobbing loudly as she realized her golden-boy billionaire had just turned into a convicted felon overnight. "Santiago! Tell them! Tell them this is your fault, not mine!"
Santiago didn't look at her. As they dragged him past my chair toward the grand exit, his bloodshot eyes locked onto mine with a look of desperate, shattered realization.

"Mariana..." he choked out. "Please... we were husband and wife."
"No, Santiago," I whispered, watching the heavy oak doors close behind them as the federal agents hauled my carrasco out into the cold autumn rain. "We were just strangers living in a house of cards. And the wind has finally arrived."
