As Victoria and Marcus Vance shuffled out of the boardroom like broken specters of their former selves, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, watching the sun glint off the bustling streets of Manhattan far below.
My father walked up beside me, handing me a fresh cup of black coffee.
"Well, Captain," my father smiled warmly, using the nickname he had given me the day I earned my first black belt in karate. "You handled that corporate hostile takeover better than most of my MBA graduates."
I took a sip of the coffee, feeling the warm caffeine steady my nerves. "Practice makes perfect, Dad."
"What's next for you?" he asked gently. "No more hiding behind assumed names, no more pretending to be an ordinary girl just to test men."
I looked out at the endless horizon of the city, where countless stories were unfolding every single day. My past was cleared, my freedom was secured, and my future belonged entirely to me. No rules, no cages, no riding crops—just open road and absolute self-reliance.
