Chapter 2 - The Ballroom of DeceptionThe Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan was a glittering cathedral of crystal chandeliers, white orchids, and champagne towers. Over five hundred of Wall Street’s most influential CEOs, supreme court justices, and international investors gathered beneath the gilded ceilings.

At Table One—positioned directly in front of the central podium—Julian Vance sat wearing his tailored tuxedo, his arm wrapped possessively around Victoria Carter's bare waist.

Victoria wore an eye-watering crimson gown, sipping vintage Dom Pérignon, her laughter loud and theatrical as she leaned close to Julian's ear. Beside them, Julian’s mother, Beatrice, and his sister, Evelyn, preened like peacocks, flaunting expensive diamond bracelets that had been purchased using corporate accounts.

"Julian, darling," Beatrice purred, adjusting her mink stole. "You were so right to leave Clara at home. Look at the people in this room! If that boring girl were sitting here in one of her thrift-store rags, I would die of embarrassment."

Evelyn snickered into her champagne glass. "She’s probably still scrubbing the grease off the dinner plates right now, Mom. Julian, did you make sure she locked the back door?"

Julian smirked, swirling his glass of scotch, his eyes gleaming with arrogant, unearned pride. "Clara knows her place, Evelyn. She understands that a successful man needs a partner who elevates his image, not a burden who reminds him of low-income print shops."

Victoria ran her manicured fingers down Julian’s lapel, her voice dripping with poisonous sweet honey. "When the Chairman of Sterling Investment Group arrives at this table, Julian, make sure you let me handle the opening remarks. The Chairman will appreciate a head of PR who knows how to project elegance."

"The Chairman is going to hand us the twenty-million-dollar expansion line tonight, Victoria," Julian boasted, leaning in to kiss her cheek in full view of the surrounding cameras. "And once that contract is signed, I'll file the divorce papers against Clara before sunrise."

Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors at the rear of the ballroom were thrown open.

The grand brass fanfare ceased. The classical quartet stopped playing mid-note.

The master of ceremonies stepped up to the main microphone, his voice echoing clearly across the hushed room:

"Ladies and gentlemen... please welcome the Founder, Majority Shareholder, and Chief Executive Chairman of Sterling Investment Group... Ms. Clara Sterling-Vance."
