Chapter 4 - The Boardroom GuillotineI turned away from Julian, walking straight toward the elevated VIP stage at the front of the grand ballroom, where a high-gloss mahogany podium and three leather executive chairs had been prepared for the keynote address.

The organizers of the gala—two state senators and the chief director of the Federal Reserve Bank—hurried forward, bowing respectfully as they escorted me to the center seat.

Julian stood frozen near the bar, his mind completely shattered. Victoria was pulling frantically on his arm, her face pale with terror.

"Julian!" Victoria hissed, her voice trembling. "Julian, what is happening?! If she is Sterling Investment Group... what happens to our fifty-million-dollar expansion loan?!"

Evelyn grabbed his other arm, her fingernails digging into his suit jacket. "Julian! Do something! Tell them she's lying! Tell them she's your wife!"

"Shut up!" Julian roared, shoving both women away from him, his eyes glued to the stage where I was stepping up to the microphone.

Marcus Vance stepped up to the second podium, tapping the microphone twice. The sound echoed through the two thousand silent guests.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus announced, his voice carrying absolute, corporate authority. "Tonight was scheduled as the formal announcement of Sterling Investment Group's capital allocation for the upcoming fiscal year. As Chief Executive, Madam Chairman Clara Vance will now deliver the official statement regarding Apex Development."

Julian took a desperate, stumbling step toward the stage, his hands raised in a pleading gesture. "Clara! Please! Don't do this here! Let's go home! We can talk about this!"

Two security guards stepped into his path, pinning his arms behind his back, immobilizing him where he stood.

I adjusted the slender silver microphone, looking out over the crowd. My gaze locked onto Julian’s wild, desperate eyes.

"Eight years ago," I began, my voice smooth, calm, and effortlessly commanding, "Apex Development was founded with a small, anonymous seed grant of two million dollars. Over the last decade, Sterling Investment Group has quietly underwritten eighty-two percent of Apex’s corporate debt notes, allowing its President, Julian Prescott, to build a public profile as a self-made developer."

A collective murmur rolled through the room. The senior board members of Apex Development, who were standing in the front row, turned to stare at Julian with absolute, horror-stricken fury.

"Tonight," I continued, unrolling a sleek white document onto the glass podium, "Apex Development was scheduled to receive a fifty-million-dollar debt restructuring line to prevent immediate insolvency following their failed port expansion in Brooklyn."

Julian’s breath hitched. He shook his head frantically, tears of panic spilling over his lashes. "Clara... please... I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"

"However," I said, my tone dropping into an ice-cold, definitive register, "following a comprehensive review of Apex's executive management, fiduciary ethics, and material asset diversion... Sterling Investment Group hereby formally revokes the credit line."

"NO!" Julian shrieked, struggling frantically against the security guards holding him. "NO! CLARA, YOU CAN'T DO THIS! IT WILL DESTROY ME!"

"Furthermore," I continued smoothly, ignoring his pathetic screams, "Sterling Investment Group is executing an immediate default call on all primary debt notes. Effective at midnight, Apex Development is placed into compulsory receivership under the control of the Vance Trust."
