Chapter 2 - The Grand EntranceThe Grand Hyatt in Manhattan was engulfed in a sea of flashing cameras, red carpets, and armed security detail. The Heart of the Nation Gala was the premier event of the financial year, bringing together senators, international bankers, and the state's most powerful developers.

Julian’s black SUV pulled up to the main valet fifteen minutes before my arrival.

Through the tinted glass of my lead escort vehicle, I watched as Julian stepped out onto the red carpet. He looked sharp in his tuxedo, adjusting his cuffs for the press photographers. Beside him, Victoria Sterling beamed, clinging tightly to his arm in her wine-red gown, posing as if she were already the lady of the apex empire. Behind them, Evelyn floated on cloud nine, waving to reporters who barely knew who she was, while Chloe took selfies on the velvet ropes.

"Look at him," Marcus murmured from the seat beside me, looking at a digital tablet displaying live crowd metrics. "He just gave an interview to Bloomberg on the steps. He claimed Apex Development is finalizing a fifty-million-dollar credit line with Sterling Investment Group tonight."

"He's confident," I noted softly. "Arrogance always precedes a fall."

"Shall we pull up, Madam Chairman?"

"Give him five minutes inside," I replied. "Let him make his rounds. Let him boast."

Inside the grand ballroom, two thousand guests mingled beneath crystal chandeliers. High-profile investors circled the room, sipping three-thousand-dollar champagne while classical violinists played from the mezzanine.

Julian stood near the main bar, surrounded by three senior board members of his company and two prominent city councilmen.

"Julian, my boy!" one of the senior councilmen boomed, patting Julian's shoulder. "Word on the street is that the mysterious Chairman of Sterling Investment Group is making a personal appearance tonight to sign your expansion contract!"

Julian flashed his trademark, practiced charm, casually adjusting his platinum watch—the watch I had secretly paid for through a blind proxy account.

"That's the word, Councilman," Julian boasted loudly, ensuring Victoria and his mother could hear him. "Sterling Investment knows quality when they see it. We've spent months aligning our vision. They know Apex Development is the future of Manhattan real estate."

Victoria leaned into Julian’s shoulder, purring softly. "Julian worked night and day for this contract, gentlemen. He practically built Apex from a tiny garage office into a powerhouse."

Evelyn joined the circle, holding a flute of champagne, sneering casually. "Real success takes dedication. It takes a man who surrounds himself with high-class partners—not dead weight that drags him down at home."

The councilmen laughed politely, assuming she was making a joke about old business rivals.

Suddenly, the brass fanfare near the main entrance cut out.

The heavy double doors of the ballroom swung wide open. The ambient chatter of two thousand elites died down to a sudden, chilling silence.

Six heavy-set private security operatives dressed in dark, unbranded suits stepped into the room, creating a wide, flawless corridor through the crowd. Behind them walked Marcus Vance, carrying a leather brief.

And behind Marcus walked me.

The midnight-black silk dress caught the light of the chandeliers like liquid onyx. The forty-carat raw-cut emerald of the Vance Heart blazed against my collarbone, commanding immediate, breath-catching awe from every seasoned jeweler and high-society matriarch in the room. I walked with absolute, fluid grace, my head held high, my posture carved from pure, unyielding authority.

Gasps rippled through the front ranks of the crowd.

"Is that...?"

"My God, look at the emerald!"

"That's the Vance heirloom! Who is she?!"

Near the main bar, Julian’s champagne glass froze halfway to his lips.

His eyes widened into dinner plates. His face went completely, terrifyingly drain of color, as if he had just watched a ghost step out of a grave. Beside him, Evelyn’s champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering noisily on the polished marble floor.

"Clara...?" Julian choked out, his voice squeaking in absolute, horrific disbelief.
