Chapter 4 - The Fall of Sophia CarterBefore Vincent could answer, Rachel Hayes stepped forward, pulling an encrypted satellite phone from her jacket.

"And as for you, Miss Carter," Prosecutor Hayes stated coldly, looking straight at Sophia.

Sophia blinked in sudden, terrified confusion. "Me...? What do you mean?"

Prosecutor Hayes tapped her phone, turning on the high-definition speaker.

The office filled with a recorded audio file from three years ago—a wiretapped phone call between Sophia Carter and a corrupt maintenance technician at the private hangar in Chicago:

"Make sure the hydraulic lines on the left wing are loosened before takeoff. I want Anna terrified. I want her to panic so Vincent finally sees how useless she is."

Vincent spun around slowly, staring at Sophia with dark, murderous eyes. The silence in the office turned into an apocalyptic, freezing vacuum.

"You...?" Vincent whispered, his baritone dropping an octave into an absolute, lethal growl. "You sabotaged the plane...?"

Sophia thrashed her hands frantically, backing toward the glass windows, her eyes bulging in pure, panic-stricken horror. "NO! VINCENT! LISTEN TO ME! IT WAS A MISTAKE! I JUST WANTED HER TO SCAPE! I DIDN'T KNOW THE ENGINE WOULD EXPLODE!"

"YOU MONSTER!" Vincent roared, charging across the room, grabbing Sophia by her collar, pinning her against the glass window with such force the frame rattled. "YOU TRIED TO KILL MY WIFE AND MY UNBORN SON!"

Two Federal Marshals lunged forward, grabbing Vincent’s broad shoulders, forcing him back, while two other deputies slammed Sophia flat onto the carpet floorboards.

CLICK. CLICK.

Heavy steel handcuffs locked tightly around Sophia’s wrists behind her back.

"Sophia Carter," Prosecutor Hayes declared, "you are under arrest for Attempted First-Degree Murder, Sabotage of an Aircraft, and Corporate Conspiracy."

Sophia shrieked hysterically, weeping tears of terror as she was dragged out through the executive double doors in total, public disgrace, surrounded by news cameras that captured her complete, final downfall for the entire country to see.

Vincent collapsed flat onto his knees right on his office carpet, burying his face in his trembling hands, letting out a raw, guttural shriek of pure, agonizing heartbreak.
