Chapter 3 - The Illusion of MalibuThree months passed like a quiet, miraculous spring after a long, dark winter storm.

Inside the high-tech, private NICU suite at Mount Sinai, my three babies grew stronger every single day. Under the round-the-clock care of the top neonatologists in the state—funded entirely by the recovered Mercer trust—Leo, Alexander, and Maya reached five pounds each, their tiny lungs fully healed, their rosy cheeks brimming with health.
Meanwhile, three thousand miles away in Los Angeles, Ethan Mercer was living in a high-stakes paradise built on borrowed time.
In a luxury oceanfront mansion in Malibu, Ethan sat at a glass patio table overlooking the Pacific Ocean, sipping espresso while reviewing entertainment trade journals.
Beside him sat Sabrina Vale, wearing a designer silk robe, her manicured fingers scrolling through social media feeds, admiring photos from her latest red-carpet appearance.
Ethan’s phone chimed sharply. It was his lead attorney, Martin Keller.
Ethan picked it up, leaning back in his teak chair with smug arrogance. "Martin. Is the Mercer trust liquidation finalized? The closing date for the Los Angeles acquisition is next week."
There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line.
"Martin?" Ethan frowned.
"Ethan... we have a massive problem," Martin Keller’s voice came through, trembling, high-pitched, and laced with pure panic. "The Supreme Court of New York just unsealed a primary injunction against Mercer Enterprises."
Ethan stood up so fast his espresso cup tipped over, dark liquid pooling across the glass table. "What are you talking about?! Claire signed the petition acknowledgment three months ago! She disappeared! She's probably living in some shelter in Pennsylvania!"
"She didn't disappear, Ethan," Martin gasped out. "She was rescued by Vance Global the night you kicked her out. And Julian Vance just filed a fifty-million-dollar suit for fraud, spousal abandonment, and corporate embezzlement."
Sabrina Vale stopped scrolling, looking up at Ethan with a sharp, suspicious glare. "Ethan... what is he talking about? You said your ex-wife took a cash settlement!"
Ethan ignored her, his face turning an ugly, sickly gray under the California sun. "Vance Global?! Why the hell is Julian Vance involved with Claire?!"
"Because Claire Mercer isn't just your ex-wife, Ethan," Martin revealed, his voice shaking violently. "She is the sole controlling shareholder of the land beneath your headquarters. And Vance Global has just called in every single commercial loan your firm holds."
The phone slipped from Ethan’s numb fingers, clattering onto the stone tiles of the patio.

Sabrina stood up, pulling her robe tight, her eyes cold, calculating, and suddenly devoid of any affection. "Ethan... if your firm loses its commercial licenses, what happens to the funding for my movie?"
Ethan didn't answer. He stared at the blue ocean, a cold, terrifying dread blooming in his chest as he realized that the quiet woman he had thrown into the rain three months ago was about to return to Manhattan with an army behind her.
